Resumo: RESUMO: Em torno das noções e conceitos de arqueologia, património,identidade e cultura,é discutido o papel da memória na permanente reconstrução de passados, traçando um paralelo com os mecanismos reguladores das funções cognitivas e revendo a construção do património e a sua função na sociedade contemporânea. Defende-se que, numa abordagem memorial que valoriza de forma crescente a dimensão imaterial do património, a pré-história se situa no campo ideal da interpenetração das dimensões material e imaterial. ABSTRACT: Around the notions and concepts of archaeology, heritage, identity and culture, the role of memory in a permanent reassessment of the past is discussed, suggesting a parallel with mechanisms that regulate cognitive functions and reviewing the construction of heritage and its role in contemporary society. Within a memorial approach that increasingly stresses the immaterial dimension of heritage, prehistory is the best field for the integration of both its material and immaterial dimensions.
