Resumo: The purpose of this text is to analyze some Canadian novels – both in French and in English – whose characters are Amerindian and Métis. I intend to demonstrate that they occupy a peripheral place in society which does not accept them inside the mainstream community and sends them back to the “savage” world. The Mestiço/a, even when he/she is almost white and integrated, is always seen as an Indian because NorthAmerican societies do not conceive mestizaje in a Brazilian way.
