Resumo: This article is part of some larger research about interracial families, and aims to understand how the identification process within family dynamics produces complex forms of self and hetero racial classifications. For this understanding, a theoretical review of the place of the "mestizo" in Brazilian race relations was done, as well as the forms of racial classifications used by our population. Later we used a case study of one of the interviews done with interracial families, in which, during the interview process, the selfassessment of the "mestizo" daughter changed three times. Depending on the relational processes, the interviewee would consider herself as white, at other times as black, and at the same time knowing that she was socially "read" as "morena" (somewhat dark skinned), thus demonstrating the radical nature of the relational process in racial classifications. All this reveals the complexity and subtlety that racial self-classification entails and promotes in the unique reality of Brazil.
