João V, D. Nuno da Cunha de Ataíde e Melo. Sua presença no Paço já se mostrava influente desde o final do reinado anterior. No reinado seguinte sua atuação política e influência potencializaram-se ainda mais, pois gozava de grande prestígio junto a D. João V e, durante a primeira metade de seu reinado, acumulou diversos ofícios, honras e dignidades eclesiásticas e seculares. Sua longa trajetória incluiu diferentes espaços de poder: o Paço, a Igreja e o Santo Ofício. Seu longo percurso iniciou-se antes do reinado joanino e chegou a ultrapassar o mesmo, alcançando os primeiros meses do reinado de D. José. O peso de D. Nuno da Cunha de Ataíde e Melo na Inquisição, na Igreja e nos conselhos e tribunais régios era notório. O cardeal controlou amplas redes clientelares entre o grupo dos Grandes e entre os diversos oficiais menores espalhados pelos corpos institucionais do Reino. Acumulou prestígio na Corte, contou com boas relações com agentes diplomáticos portugueses e manteve farto contato com figuras de peso na política internacional do período. Por décadas, diversas nomeações para os mais variados ofícios no Reino e no Ultramar passaram por suas indicações. No universo eclesiástico, sua influência também era explícita, não apenas como inquisidor-geral, mas como bispo-titular e ministro do rei. D. Nuno da Cunha de Ataíde e Melo indicou diversos eclesiásticos para cargos ultramarinos e para o Santo Ofício, manteve-se a par das disputas políticas dentro das diversas Ordens em Portugal, guardou contato com o corpo de prelados portugueses e, até mesmo com cardeais e grandes figuras da política europeia espalhadas por Roma, Paris, Províncias Unidas e Espanha, além de ter sido um importante correspondente com o corpo diplomático português ao longo da Guerra de Sucessão Espanhola e nos assuntos que concerniam ao interesse português na Santa Sé. Entender e reconstruir a trajetória desse importante agente político do Antigo Regime português é de fundamental auxílio para se construir novas compreensões sobre as dinâmicas e estruturas do período.CAPESWe focused our work on the political figure of the general-inquisitor and minister of the Universal Dispatch of king D. João V, D. Nuno da Cunha de Ataíde e Melo. His presence in the Palace had been influential since the end of portuguese previous reign. In the following reign his political performance and influence were further enhanced, as he enjoyed great prestige with D. João V and, during the first half of his reign, accumulated several offices, honors and ecclesiastical and secular dignities. His long history included different spaces of power: the Palace, the Church and the Inquisition. His long journey began before the joanine reign and even surpassed it, reaching the first months of the reign of king Joseph. The weight of D. Nuno da Cunha de Ataíde e Melo in the Inquisition, in the Church, in the royal councils and in the Court was notorious. The cardinal controlled extensive social networks between the group of the Greats and among the various minor officers scattered throughout the kingdom's institutional structure. He accumulated prestige in the Court, had good relations with portuguese diplomatic agents and maintained close contact with leading figures in international politics of the period. For decades, several appointments to the most varied offices in the Kingdom and overseas have passed through their nominations. In the ecclesiastical domain, his influence was also explicit, not only as inquisitor-general, but as titular-bishop and minister of the king. D. Nuno da Cunha de Ataíde e Melo appointed several ecclesiasticals for overseas positions and for the Inquisition offices, he kept abreast of the political disputes within the various religious orders in Portugal, kept in touch with the portuguese prelate corps and even with cardinals and great figures of european politics spread throughout Rome, Paris, the United Provinces and Spain, besides being an important correspondent with the portuguese diplomatic corps throughout the War of Spanish Succession and in matters concerning the portuguese´s interest in the Holy See.
