Tendo em vista que a maloclusão e a estética dentofacial alterada podem comprometer o desenvolvimento emocional, auto-estima e integração social, é importante um entendimento dos fatores que podem comprometer o acesso ao aparelho ortodôntico e a adesão ao tratamento nesta fase de vida. Percebe-se que apesar do progresso nas pesquisas sobre a relação entre senso de coerência e saúde bucal, ainda não há na literatura uma abordagem a respeito da relação entre senso de coerência, maloclusão e tratamento ortodôntico. Assim, este trabalho busca associar este fator psicossocial com a maloclusão dentária, a fim de contribuir mais estreitamente com as necessidades funcionais, estéticas e psicológicas baseadas na individualidade e assim, auxiliar na melhoria da qualidade de vida do adolescente. Trata-se de um estudo transversal com uma amostra de 1.153 adolescentes matriculados nas 11 escolas da rede pública de ensino do município de São Lourenço da Mata-PE-Brasil, onde foram investigados: condições sociodemográficas, comportamentais, fatores psicossociais e de saúde bucal associando estes fatores com o acesso ao tratamento ortodôntico. Destes 1.153 adolescentes, apenas 301 tiveram acesso ao aparelho ortodôntico, obteve-se, então, uma subamostra onde foi avaliada a associação entre o senso de coerência e a adesão ao tratamento ortodôntico. Assim, pôde-se estudar não só o acesso ao tratamento ortodôntico, mas também a adesão a este. Para a coleta de dados, empregou-se um questionário autoaplicável, contendo a versão curta da escala do Senso de Coerência (SOC-13) e foi realizado um exame clínico intrabucal. O estado oclusal foi avaliado através do Índice de Estética Dental (DAI) e a adesão ao tratamento ortodôntico foi definida pela combinação entre as variáveis: ter maloclusão, ter acesso ao aparelho ortodôntico, aquisição do aparelho ortodôntico com profissional habilitado e manutenção periódica do aparelho ortodôntico (visita ao cirurgião-dentista para a manutenção do aparelho com intervalo de, no máximo, 2 meses). A prevalência da adesão ao tratamento ortodôntico foi de 81,2%. A análise de regressão logística revelou que o sexo e o uso de recursos essenciais na higiene bucal (escova, creme e fio dental) estão associados significativamente a adesão ao tratamento ortodôntico na adolescência independentes do senso de coerência. Assim, sugere-se que adolescentes do sexo feminino e com maior cuidado com a saúde bucal têm maior acesso, assim como poder de adesão ao tratamento ortodôntico que os demais adolescentes.Malocclusion in Brazilian adolescents is considered a public health problem due to its high prevalence, corresponding to 34.9% in adolescents between 15 and 19 years of age. Because malocclusion and altered dentofacial aesthetics may compromise emotional development, self-esteem and social integration, it is important to understand the factors that may compromise access to the orthodontic appliance and adherence to treatment at this stage of life. It is noticed that despite the progress in research on the relationship between sense of coherence and oral health, there is still in the literature an approach regarding the relationship between sense of coherence, malocclusion and orthodontic treatment. Thus, this work seeks to associate this psychosocial factor with dental malocclusion, in order to contribute more closely to the functional, aesthetic and psychological needs based on individuality and, thus, to increase its contribution in improving the quality of life of the adolescent. This is a cross- sectional study with a sample of 1.153 adolescents enrolled in the 11 public schools in the city of São Lourenço da Mata, Brazil, where they were investigated: socio-demographic, behavioral, psychosocial and oral health factors associated these factors with access to orthodontic treatment. Of these 1.153 adolescents, only 301 had access to the orthodontic appliance, a sub-sample was obtained in which the association between the sense of coherence and adherence to this treatment was evaluated. Thus, it was possible to study not only access to orthodontic treatment, but also adherence to it. For the data collection, a self- administered questionnaire was used, containing the short version of the Senso de Coerência scale (SOC-13), and a clinical examination was performed intrabuccal. Occlusal status was assessed through the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI) and adherence to orthodontic treatment was defined by the combination of variables: having a malocclusion, access to the orthodontic appliance, orthodontic appliance acquisition with a qualified professional, and periodic maintenance of the orthodontic appliance (visit to the dental surgeon for maintenance of the appliance with a maximum interval of 2 months). The prevalence of adherence to orthodontic treatment was 81.2%. Logistic regression analysis revealed that sex and the use of essential oral hygiene resources (toothbrush, cream and floss) are significantly associated with adherence to orthodontic treatment in adolescence regardless of the sense of consistency.
