Todos esses aspectos combinados conferem caráter complexo e sistêmico a esse patrimônio, ao tempo em que trazem uma série de desafios ao seu reconhecimento como bem cultural. Desafios potencializados pela inexistência de uma estratégia de preservação capaz de orientar a seleção dos bens ferroviários a serem submetidos à avaliação de interesse cultural, considerando sua natureza complexa e sistêmica. Afinal, não é intenção preservar tudo, tampouco, tutelar indistintamente todo e qualquer testemunho legado pelo passado ferroviário. Pressupõe-se que os lugares centrais remanescentes de uma rede ferroviária que, na espacialidade atual ainda resguardem materialidade histórica capaz de transmitir o conhecimento sobre seu funcionamento, conformam-se como sua expressão máxima. Portanto, são elementos suscetíveis de avaliação como de interesse cultural. Entende-se nesta tese que os lugares centrais de uma rede ferroviária são revelados a partir da apreensão da sua lógica funcional, a qual gera e articula seus sistemas de ações e de objetos. Logo, o objetivo desta tese é propor procedimentos investigativos de reconhecimento do patrimônio ferroviário estruturado em rede a partir da identificação e da hierarquização dos seus lugares centrais, na perspectiva de oferecer meios que possam contribuir para construção de uma estratégia de preservação desse legado. Para tanto, a partir de olhares interdisciplinares advindos do campo da Preservação Cultural, da História e da Geografia foi possível firmar uma base teórica e metodológica para ancorar a montagem dos aludidos procedimentos, tomando-se como objeto empírico a Rede Ferroviária Nordeste. Assim, a tese evidencia que os lugares centrais de uma rede ferroviária são passíveis de avaliação social, desde que a materialidade presente no espaço, associada aos registros documentais (mapas, fotografias e relatos orais),seja ainda reconhecida pela sociedade como testemunho da história da técnica, da arquitetura, da engenharia, do trabalho e do funcionamento das estradas de ferro.This thesis deals with the preservation of railway heritage characterized by a diversified amount of assets that, articulated and generated by a functional logic, form a network structure deployed over vast territorial areas. All these combined aspects give a complex and systemic character to this heritage, to the time when they bring a series of challenges to their recognition as a cultural asset. Challenges potentiated by the inexistence of a preservation strategy that, when apprehending the complexity of the railway assets, can guide the selection of assets to be submitted to the Evaluating of cultural interest. After all, it is not the intention to preserve everything, nor to protect any witness bequeathed by the railway. It is assumed that the remaining courtyards of a railway network, characterized as central places, still preserve historical materiality capable of transmitting, in the present, knowledge about its operation. Therefore, they conform as the maximum expression of a network, susceptible of evaluation as of cultural interest. It is understood in this thesis that the central places of a railway network can be revealed from the apprehension of its functional logic, which generates and articulates its systems of actions and objects. Thus, the purpose of this thesis is to propose investigative procedures for the recognition of the heritage of a railway network with a view to the identification and hierarchy of its central places, with a view to contributing to the preservation of this legacy. To do so, from multiple perspectives from the field of Cultural Preservation, History and Geography, it was possible to establish a theoretical and methodological basis to anchor the assembly of such procedures, taking as an empirical object the Northeast Railway Network.
