Utilizamos como metodologia principal a pesquisa qualitativa e como principal técnica de coleta a entrevista compreensiva. Para a análise, recorremos à análise de conteúdo e a categorização dos dados através de temas. Para isso, entrevistamos 13 famílias de estudantes que obtiveram desempenhos escolares variados, apreendidos a partir da média geral obtida no 9º ano, atentando principalmente aos casos exitosos. Ao fim, identificamos seis principais práticas ou características familiares associadas entre si, com impactos sobre o desempenho escolar: práticas de incentivo e visão de futuro, ordem moral doméstica, mobilização escolar, solidariedade familiar, autodeterminação e capital cultural. De maneira geral os resultados corroboram os fatores já identificados na literatura, mas que precisam ser mais aprofundados através de pesquisas que utilizem métodos diversificados. Além disso, esta é apenas uma faceta de um problema mais complexo que envolve outros fatores, como o papel da instituição escolar. Acreditamos que a escola tem grande responsabilidade na definição dos casos de bom e mau desempenho e que é importante se pensar, na esteira de Dubet, em se criar uma escola justa, ou menos injusta.This research aims to explain the school performance of students with low socioeconomics level from some family practices, considering the cases called school excellence or “success”. Que use the qualitative method and the comprehensive interview for construction of data. For analysis, we use the content analysis and the categorization through themes. For this, we interviwed thirteen families of students with different performances, measured from the general average of the ninth grade, observing the “success” cases. At the end, we identify six main family practices or characteristics associated with impact on the school performance: incentive practices and vision of the future, domestic moral order, school mobilization, family solidarity, self-determination and cultural capital. In general, the results corroborate the factors still found in literature, but it's necessary deepen them in researchs using different methods. Besides that, this is just one aspect of the problem wich involves anothers like the school insititution.
