Utiliza-se um desenho de Regressão Descontínua (RD) com múltiplos cutoffs para identificar o efeito e entender os mecanismos de resposta das empresas. Os resultados indicam um efeito médio local heterogêneo decorrente da intensidade diferente do enforcement exercido sobre cada nicho de empresas. Contudo, apenas as empresas maiores, categorizadas com ativo total acima da mediana, aumentam a receita bruta reportada e os tributos pagos. As empresas mais agressivas também passam a reportar maiores valores de receita bruta, mas conseguem evitar pagar mais tributos. Há sugestiva evidência de que alguns tipos de empresas conseguem se reajustar, provavelmente via mudança de planejamento e aumento de liquidez, de forma a não comprometer seus resultados. Os achados sugerem que a auditoria por autoridade fiscal pode promover ganhos tanto para as empresas quanto em termos de arrecadação fiscal.The study analyzes the impact of fiscal monitoring on the tax behavior of the large firms listed on the Brazilian Stock Exchange (B3) and explores a natural experiment caused by the intervention of the RFB through the Economic-Tax Monitoring of the largest taxpayers. A Discontinuous Regression (RD) design with multiple cutoffs is used to identify the effect and understand the companies’ response mechanisms. The results indicate a heterogeneous local average effect due to the different intensity of enforcement exercised on each niche of companies. However, only the largest companies, categorized with total assets above the median, increase reported gross revenue and taxes paid. The more aggressive companies also start to report higher values of gross revenue, but manage to avoid paying more taxes. There is suggestive evidence that some types of companies are able to readjust, probably via a change in planning and increased liquidity, so as not to compromise their results.
