Esta pesquisa estuda os determinantes da demanda dos indivíduos por religião. A partir da hipótese da segurança existencial, pergunta-se como a proteção fornecida por programas sociais do governo afeta os níveis de religiosidade. Usando dados empíricos de países do Leste Europeu no período de 2010 a 2018, o modelo econométrico de efeitos fixos gera coeficientes de aproximadamente -0,9 indicando uma relação negativa entre religiosidade e seguridade social. Os resultados levam à conclusão de que indivíduos apresentam menores níveis de religiosidade na presença de outras opções, como serviços de seguridade oferecidos pelo governo, para enfrentar suas dificuldades.CAPESReligion has influenced societies for a while and continue to determine political and economic behavior. This research studies the determinants of demand for religion by individuals. Based on the existential security hypothesis, it asks how the security obtained through government social programs affects religiosity levels. Using empirical data from Eastern European countries through 2010 and 2018, the fixed effects econometric model yields coeficients close to -0,9 indicating a negative relationship between religiosity and social security.
