Resumo: The Burnout Syndrome (BS) is related to the laboral exercise, and occurs mainly in professions which present as a characteristic the intense contact with other people, like in teaching as well. This research aimed to investigate the presence of BS in Physical Education teachers from the municipal schools of Pelotas. The investigation featured as a research of transversal descriptive matters. From a population of 118 teachers, the sample was composed by 94 teachers from the 40 schools of the municipal ring. In the data acquisition, the Maslach Burnout Inventory was utilized for the evaluation of the syndrome and a questionnaire for the socio-demographic characterization, and the context of teaching intervention. The collected data were stored in Excel s spreadsheet, version 2007, and the analyses were carried out by STATA version 12. The data has had normal distribution, and the parametric statistics was performed in the analysis, with a significance level of p<00.5. The Chi-Square Test and The Exact of Fisher were used to verify the difference among the variable which characterize the BS: Emotional Exhaustion (EE), Depersonalization (DE), and Professional Fulfillment (PF). It was testified that 36.2% belonged to the male, and 63.8%, to the female. It was verified that 46.8% were under 39 years old, and 53.2% were 40 or above. It was identified that 54.3% were married, and 45.7% belonged to other marital status categories. Among the surveyed, 64.9% received under 5 minimum wages, whereas 35.1% received under 6 or more minimum wages as family income. Still it was verified that 47.9% were graduated, while 52.1% were post-graduated. It was certified that the majority 70.2% complies equal working hours or above 40 h per week; 77.7% perform predominantly in classroom; 69.1% have exclusive dedication to the municipal ring, and still are inserted in the consolidation cycles (28.7%) of teaching career. Under general data concerning Burnout Syndrome, it was verified that 60.6% of the surveyed with high Emotional Exhaustion (EE), 22.3% with high Depersonalization (DE), and 34.0% of the teachers presented low Professional Fulfillment (PF). The study revealed that 27.7% of the surveyed presented situation of vulnerability or in the edge of BS, and 8.5% of the teachers showing concomitantly high EE, high DE, and low PF, signalizing the presence of BS. There was significant statistics in the dimensions: EE with the variable marital status (p=0,032); DE with the variable graduation (p=0,028), and in PF, with the variable age (p=0,004). We consider that the presented results become important preventive actions by information about the BS, and the support for all the school community to the teacher, as well as special care to the ones at the beginning of their career

We consider that the presented results become important preventive actions by information about the BS, and the support for all the school community to the teacher, as well as special care to the ones at the beginning of their careerA Síndrome de Burnout (SB) relaciona-se ao exercício laboral e ocorre principalmente nas profissões que apresentam como característica o contato intenso com outras pessoas, como sucede com a docência.
