Resumo: | In this article, we aim to describe and analyze the late nineteenth century discourses of Brazilian researchers on language and race. Our objective is to understand the relationship between the insertion of the racial and biological theories in the country and the view of the Brazilian intellectuals on the spoken and written portuguese language in Brazil, especially with regard to its specificity and African influence in this language. The authors analyzed were, mainly, Joaquim Nabuco, Sílvio Romero, João Ribeiro and Nina Rodrigues. We verify that the researches of this period were strongly marked by ideals of civility and ethnic and linguistic purity. |
