Resumo: Illness is also a socio-cultural construction and cancer is one of the most symbology-loaded illnesses. People who experience it, go through a process of liminarity where they may emerge modified, perceiving a new meaning to life. In daily health care, we perceive that this symbolic culturally-constructed dimension has been neglected. Through an anthropological view, we try to bring out the grounds in order to re-think nursing actions towards people who experience cancer, extending their perspectives beyond the biological body.

As pessoas que o vivenciam passam por um processo de liminaridade, do qual podem emergir modificadas, com um novo sentido para a vida. No cotidiano do cuidado em saúde percebemos que esta dimensão simbólica e culturalmente construída tem sido negligenciada. A partir de uma perspectiva antropológica procuramos trazer subsídios para (re)pensar o nosso fazer enfermagem voltado às pessoas que vivenciam o câncer, ampliando suas perspectivas para além do corpo biológico.La enfermedad es tambiem una construcción sociocultural y el cáncer es una de las enfermedades más cargadas de símbolos. La gente que vive profundamente el cáncer pasa por un proceso del liminaridade donde emerge modificada, con un sentido nuevo para la vida en el diario del cuidado en salud se percibe que nos hemos descuidado de esta dimensión simbólica cultural construida.
