Resumo: Study of qualitative nature objectifying to reflect on the issue of autonomy with a group of eight nurses fromintensive care units of a teaching hospital. The data collected by means of a semi-structured interview were submitted toBardin’s content analysis. The analysis made it possible the identification of two categories: perceiving the complexity ofthe autonomy meaning and identifying facilitators and hindrances to the construction of autonomy in the work process.The results make it possible the perception that autonomy is still a value to be reached, it has multiple understanding andshould be daily conquered in hospital settings due to intrinsic nursing conditions as well as institutional conditions, oftenexperiencing situations of domination and subordination in relations established with other professionals, the hierarchicstructure of the institution and with technical health-caring models.

Os dados coletados porentrevista semi-estruturada foram submetidos à análise de conteúdo proposta por Bardin. A análise possibilitou a identificaçãode duas categorias: percebendo a complexidade do significado de autonomia e identificando no processo de trabalho ascondições facilitadoras e dificultadoras à construção da autonomia. Os resultados possibilitaram a percepção de queautonomia ainda é um valor a ser habilitado, tem múltiplas compreensões e sua conquista se constrói no cotidiano da vidahospitalar por condições intrínsecas do enfermeiro e por condições do entorno institucional. Estes vivenciam muitasvezes, situações de dominação e subordinação nas relações estabelecidas com outros profissionais, com a estruturahierárquica da instituição e com os modelos técnico-assistenciais de saúde.El estudio de naturaleza cualitativa tuvo el objetivo de reflexionar acerca de la cuestión de la autonomía de ungrupo de ocho enfermeras de unidades de terapia intensiva de un hospital escuela. Los datos recogidos fueron sometidosal análisis del contenido de Bardin. El análisis hizo posible la identificación de dos categorías: percibiendo la complejidaddel significado de la autonomia; e identificando en el proceso del trabajo los modos mas fáciles y mas dificultadores a laconstrucción de la autonomía. Los resultados muetran que la autonomía todavia es un valor a ser incorporado a la vida delhospital, por las condiciones intrínsecas de la enfermera y de las condiciones del institución.
