THE FATHER’S PERCEPTION IN RELATION TO LABOR AND CHILDBIRTH

Resumo: The objectives of this qualitative study were to assess the fathers’ experience concerning the labor andchildbirth of their partners/wives. The subjects of the study were partners/husbands who were present at their child’sbirth in a teaching hospital in Curitiba – PR, from September to October 2006. Data were collected through semi-structuredinterviews. Data analysis was conducted through content analysis as described by Bardin (1979). It was found that thefather’s participation in his partner’s/wife’s labor and childbirth is extremely beneficial for the family as a whole, strengtheningthe family bond. The man’s participation in the childbirth process is something desired by both men and women in ourcurrent society.

Los sujetos de la investigación fueron maridos/compañeros que presenciaron el nacimientodel hijo en un hospital-escuela de la ciudad de Curitiba, en el período de septiembre a octubre de 2006. Los datos fueronrecolectados a través de entrevista semiestructurada. El análisis de los datos fue realizado a través del Análisis deContenido descripta por Bardin. Fue posible verificar que la participación del padre durante el trabajo de parto y parto desu esposa/compañera es benéfica para la familia en general, fortalece el lazo familiar. La participación del hombre en elproceso del parto es algo deseado por los hombres y mujeres de nuestra sociedad actual.Pesquisa qualitativa que teve como objetivos conhecer a vivência dos pais em relação ao trabalho de parto eparto de sua esposa. Os sujeitos da pesquisa foram maridos/companheiros que presenciaram o nascimento do filho em umhospital escola da cidade de Curitiba, no período de setembro a outubro de 2006. Os dados foram coletados através deentrevista semi-estruturada. A análise dos dados foi realizada através da Análise de Conteúdo descrita por Bardin. Foipossível verificar que a participação do pai durante o trabalho de parto e parto de sua esposa/companheira é benéfico paraa família em geral, fortalece o vínculo familiar.
