Resumo: Care, for critical patients, requires technical excellence and humanism to get technical and scientific high-quality care without putting aside patients´ personhood thus reaching ethic-moral excellence of care. The present discussion points out issues regarding patients’ selection/election as well as reasoning/rationing of therapeutic and diagnostic measures grounded by the ethical background of beneficence, non-maleficence, justice and respect for autonomy. These ethical principles were pondered and specified by the ethics of care.

These ethical principles were pondered and specified by the ethics of care.El paciente crítico necesita de una conjunción de la excelencia técnica con el máximo humanismo, a fin de que se efectúe una atención sanitaria de gran cualidad técnica y científica, sin dejar de mirar la condición de persona, sino no se logrará la excelencia ético-moral del cuidado. Con base en los referenciales éticos de la beneficencia, no maleficencia, justicia y autonomía, la presente reflexión plantea las cuestiones de selección-elección de pacientes y del razonamiento-racionamiento de medios terapéuticos y diagnósticos. O paciente crítico necessita da conjunção da excelência técnica e do máximo humanismo para que se concretize uma atenção de alta qualidade técnico-científica, sem que fique de lado sua condição de pessoa, alcançando-se, assim, também a excelência ético-moral do cuidado.
