Being-in-between: the intersubjective condition of the therapeutic relation

Resumo: The objective of this theoretical study is to propose a model for understanding the therapeutic relation through the analysis of the ontological and ontic perspective of being-in-between. Eight elements are considered as constitutive of this relation: intersubjectivity, empathy, communication, technique, complaint, historicity, temporality and meaning. Through a critical analysis of these theoretical constructs, we propose to disrupt the conception that psychotherapy is based on a subjectivist, monologic and atemporal view. We demonstrate that the therapeutic relation is a dialogical and intersubjective encounter, inserted in historicity and temporality, in which the therapist and client, mediated by communication and guided by a specific psychotherapeutic model, build meaning about suffering and the therapeutic complaint. The proposed model of understanding reveals the epistemological and methodological potential of an investigation which may integrate different traditions in qualitative research, such as phenomenology, constructionism and linguistics. Finally, empirical and methodological proposal of data generation and analysis are indicated, highlighting that a psychotherapeutic practice based on the “in-between” is the necessary path for a clinic that claims to be phenomenologically grounded.

Ocho elementos se consideran constitutivos de esa relación: intersubjetividad, empatía, comunicación, técnica, queja, historicidad, temporalidad y sentido. Por medio del análisis crítico de esos constructos teóricos, se propone romper con la concepción de que la psicoterapia parte de una visión subjetivista, monológica y atemporal. Se demuestra que la relación terapéutica es un encuentro dialógico e intersubjetivo, inserto en la historicidad y en la temporalidad, en el que terapeuta y cliente, mediados por la comunicación y orientados por un modelo psicoterápico específico, construyen sentidos sobre el sufrimiento y la queja terapéutica. El modelo de comprensión propuesto pone de manifiesto el potencial epistemológico y metodológico de una investigación que se plantee integrar diferentes tradiciones en la investigación cualitativa, como la fenomenología, el construccionismo y la lingüística. Por último, se señalan propuestas empíricas y metodológicas de generación y análisis de datos que ponen en evidencia que una práctica psicoterápica fundada en el “entre” es el camino necesario para una clínica que se pretenda de base fenomenológica.O objetivo deste estudo teórico é propor um modelo de compreensão da relação terapêutica por meio da análise da esfera ontológica do ser-entre (condição ontologicamente intersubjetiva da subjetividade) e a esfera do estar-entre (condição ôntica do estar em relação). Demonstra-se que a relação terapêutica é um encontro dialógico e intersubjetivo, inserido na historicidade e na temporalidade, em que terapeuta e cliente, mediados pela comunicação e orientados por um modelo psicoterápico específico, constroem sentidos sobre o sofrimento e a queixa terapêutica. O modelo de compreensão proposto evidencia o potencial epistemológico e metodológico de investigação que poderá integrar diferentes tradições na pesquisa qualitativa como a fenomenologia, o construcionismo e a linguística.
