Spatial-temporal data model for GIS analysis of the quality of water in a watershed

Resumo: Geographic Information Systems are used to assist the environmental management. Among others, one of its functions is to manage the information about availability and condition of the natural resources. Those variables change from one place to another and throughout the time, so it is necessary to understand the dynamic of changes. This paper presents a space-time data model for GIS to identify the changes occurred in the quality of water in a basin and to relate them to the events and sources of pollution that has caused it. A study area was chosen in order to verify the efficiency of the model implementation which is the Barigüi River Basin and it is located at the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba, Parana State, Brazil. The water quality data used are related to the Biochemical Oxygen Demand - DBO5 parameter, which indicates the existence of domestic and industrial sewage in the rivers.

Uma das funções dos Sistemas de Informações Geográficas quando utilizados para auxiliar na gestão do meio ambiente, é gerenciar as informações sobre disponibilidade e condições dos recursos naturais. As variáveis relativas a esses recursos se alteram de uma região para outra e ao longo do tempo, devido à influência de diversos fatores, sendo necessário acompanhar a dinâmica das mudanças ocorridas. Este artigo apresenta um modelo de dados espaço-temporal em SIG que possibilita identificar as alterações ocorridas na qualidade da água em uma bacia hidrográfica e relacioná-las aos eventos que as causaram e as fontes geradoras da poluição. Para testar sua eficiência, o modelo foi implementado no SIG ArcView 3.2, para a bacia do Rio Barigüi, localizada na Região Metropolitana de Curitiba, no estado do Paraná, Brasil. Os dados relativos a qualidade da água utilizados referem-se ao parâmetro Demanda Bioquímica de Oxigênio - DBO5, que está relacionado à presença de efluentes domésticos e industriais num corpo d’água.
