Decline of sunspot number of the solar cycle 23: reduction of the ionospheric activity and improvement of the GPS positioning Abstract The error due to the ionosphere in the GPS observables depends on the Total Electron Content (TEC) in the ionospheric layer. The TEC varies in the time and space, and it is influenced by several variables, among them the solar cycle. This cycle, with approximately 11 year-old duration, is associated to the occurrences of sunspot, and the increase of TEC is proportional to the sunspot number. Nowadays, the Sun is in the cycle 23, and the period of maximum solar activity embraced the years of 2000 and 2001, what caused the increase of the sunspot number and, consequently, of the TEC in the ionosphere. In 2004 the solar cycle 23 is in a period of decline of the sunspot number and consequently of TEC. In this paper, experiments were accomplished to present the reduction of TEC and of the error due to the ionosphere in the propagation of the GPS signals, and therefore the improvement in the GPS positioning. |
