Resumo: This paper presents the results of a research that aimed at using the concepts of the theory of cognition in the representation and cartographic visualization, under participatory mapping optics, so as to  produce cartographic documents. To reach these objectives, cartographic documents were elaborated, from the understanding of the user, and the results of the application of cartographic education resources in the quilombola territory of Castainho, in Garanhuns – PE. From the preliminary process of cartographic education, a three dimensional model and a participatory map were constructed by the users. The results evidenced  the importance of understanding spatial information and the potentiality of its use for the management of territory by the community.

Este trabalho apresenta os resultados de uma pesquisa teve como objetivo utilizar os conceitos da teoria da cognição na representação e visualização cartográfica, sob a ótica do mapeamento participativo, visando à construção de documentoscartográficos a partir da necessidade do usuário, independente de seu conhecimento em cartografia. Para atender a esses  objetivos foram construídos documentos cartográficos sob a ótica do usuário e analisados os resultados da aplicação de recursos da educação cartográfica no território quilombola de Castainho, em Garanhuns-PE. A partir de um processo preliminar de educação cartográfica, foram elaborados pelos usuários um  mapa participativo e uma maquete do território.  Os resultados demonstram a importância da compreensão da informação espacial e das potencialidades do seu uso para o gerenciamento do território pela comunidade.
