With the process of modernization of Brazilian agriculture that took place after the 1960s, agrarian space has undergone significant structural and socioeconomic transformations. However, the organization of activities within family farming has been directly altered, and a new reorganization of this social category is necessary. Seeking the understanding of this statement, this article aims to analyze the main transformations occurred in the agrarian space of the municipality of Pinhal Grande / RS in the period 1993-2017, identifying the reflexes in relation to family agriculture. Specifically, the objective was to (a) evaluate the spatial and technical transformations present in the agrarian space along the time scale analyzed; (b) To know the organization of the productive matrix and its repercussions for the development of family agriculture, (c) To identify the economic and social impacts occurred in the rural area of the municipality. The methodology was organized around theoretical matrices and data collection from primary sources (family farmers and public agencies) and secondary sources (Agricultural Census and municipal agricultural production). The work developed allowed to list the elements that influenced the transformations in the agrarian space of the municipality, mainly from the modernization of agriculture and the expansion of the soybean crop. In this context, the data show that from this process, the agrarian space has been organized in a contradictory way, presenting dynamic spaces, encompassing the largest territorial area of the municipality, where commercial crops such as soybean and livestock are predominant in family farms. families and spaces in which family farming "tries" to remain in smallholder areas, with smoking as the main culture responsible for aggregating income in the property.Keywords: Agrarian space; Modernization of agriculture; Family farming.
