Resumo: This research investigated the main theorical-conceptual themes related to sustainable development and how Brazilian Geography claims their fields to be (physical, human and instrumental). The results were obtained by the hypothetical-deductive path combined to the analysis of Focault discourses in a hundred and two articles captured from Qualis System CAPES of the magazines Mercator, Sociedade & Natureza and RA’eGA. It was concluded that though strict and necessary, the theorical classifications are not absolute, neither are them definite. Nevertheless, it was confirmed the manifestation of three particularities related to the sustainable development in the geographical production of the country: the first was restricted to the ecological dimension of the environment and correlated the sustainability with the preservation of biotic/abiotic elements of anthropic influences – this particularity showed low adherence (6,8%) being overwhelmingly represented by physical geographers, physical-human geographers and physical-instrumental geographers; the second particularity, characterized by the concept of hegemonic of the sustainable development, played a major role due to its influence of supranational organs (ONU and Banco Mundial) in the policy guidelines of the countries in the world, for, 62,9% of the researched articles expressed this justification; finally, the third particularity clustered anti-hegemonic perspectives about sustainability and, even facing such a big diversity in its theorical framework, it was registered in 30,3% of the academic productions here investigated – the last recurrence concentrated a major relation of human geographers in relation to the second which presented a bigger proportion of physical geographers. At the same time, three theorical-conceptual areas of the sustainable development were identified by its expressive contribution of researchers connected to the nature of science field and/or human sciences including the coverage of Brazilian Geography concerning studies and apprehension of the relation established over space.Key words: Sustainable Development; Sustainability; Epistemology; Geography.
