HUMBOLDT IN THE MIDST OF LANDSCAPE: THE NATURE IN DIALOGUE

Resumo: This paper presents an analysis of some aspects of the work of the German scientist Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) and discusses the author and his work in the context of naturalistic epistemology of Geography in view of prevailing philosophical ideas of his time. It examines, specially, the influences of the German idealism and romantism in the hermeneutical and methodological development of his Naturphilosophie and in his work as a Geographer. This paper also approaches, specifically, some conceptions he developed in his geographical exploration trip to Spanish America (1799-1804), where in the narratives about American landscapes this singular Geography (a Γεογρáφnμα) can be identified: a live, comparative, conective and interactive description, or a “picture”, of nature in searching for a cosmic dimension. It also discusses special features of his theoretical conceptions regarding variations in nature when compared to Charles Darwin’s Theory of Natural Selection (1809-1882).Keywords: Humboldt; Naturalist Geography; Philosophy of Nature; Landscape.

Este trabalho apresenta uma análise sobre aspectos da obra do cientista alemão Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) e discute o autor e obra no contexto da epistemologia naturalista da Geografia e em face das ideias filosóficas predominantes do seu tempo. Verificando, sobretudo, as influências do idealismo e do romantismo alemão no desenvolvimento hermenêutico e metodológico de sua Naturphilosophie e em seu exercício de Geógrafo. Bem como, especificamente, algumas concepções por ele desenvolvidas – a partir da sua viagem de exploração geográfica à América espanhola (1799-1804) – e em cujas narrativas sobre as paisagens pode se identificar o desenvolvimento dessa escrita humboldtiana (uma Γεογρáφnμα): uma descrição viva, ou “pintura”, comparativa, mas conectiva e interativa da natureza na busca de uma descrição geográfica que visava atingir uma dimensão cósmica. Aborda também particularidades de suas concepções teóricas quanto às variações na natureza comparativamente à Teoria da Seleção Natural de Charles Darwin (1809-1882).Palavras-chave: Humboldt.
