Assim, buscou-se problematizar sobre como mulheres não-mães reconstroem suas recordações a respeito da maternidade, ou seja, como elas se colocam diante de tão vasta campanha desfraldada ao longo do século XX em prol da suposta obrigação feminina em ser mãe. Para atingirmos os objetivos centrais da tese optou-se pela divisão de capítulos tendo como fio condutor os múltiplos sentimentos que podem envolver a maternidade e sua ausência. Para fins metodológicos esta pesquisa se ancora nos princípios da história oral com o intuito de debater sobre as reconstruções e significações da memória sobre a experiência de não ser mãe, abordando sentimentos como o amor, desejo de conhecer, paixão, ausência e solidão. As entrevistas das mulheres não-mães estão divididas em três grandes grupos. O primeiro grupo é ocupado por mulheres que nasceram nas décadas de 1920 e 1930 e desta forma entraram na vida sexual-reprodutiva nas décadas de 1940 e 1950. O segundo grupo é composto por mulheres que nasceram nas décadas de 1940 a 1950 e desde o início de sua vida sexual reprodutiva (nas décadas de 1960 e 1970) já conviveram com a chamada "revolução sexual?, a criação da pílula e a popularização de outros métodos anticoncepcionais. Já o terceiro grupo é formado por jovens senhoras que nasceram em plena revolução sexual, isto é, nas décadas de 1960 e 1970 e assim iniciaram sua vida sexual e reprodutiva nas décadas de 1980 e 1990. Com o intuito de verificar a consolidação do estereótipo materno ao longo do século XX bem como os debates travados a respeito da infertilidade e da esterilidade optamos por analisar teses médicas apresentadas à Faculdade de Medicina do Rio de Janeiro datadas da primeira metade do século XX. Para compreender a intermediação desse discurso médico consolidado no início do século e as mulheres, optamos por analisar a Revista Pais e Filhos, fundada em 1968 e existente no mercado editorial até a atualidade. Todavia o período de exemplares analisados abarca os anos de 1968 até 2000, fechando assim o século XX. A escolha da revista se deve pelo fato de ser a primeira revista brasileira a tratar específicos da gestação e da maternagem. Consideramos a revista como uma mediadora entre o conhecimento médico e as mulheres, portanto um veículo de divulgação de saberes e práticas a respeito da maternidade bem como da ausência de filhos. Palavras- Chave: maternidade, sentimentos, gênero, subjetividade.Abstract: This research proposed the analysis of the experience of the absence of motherhood throughout the twentieth century. Thus, we sought to discuss how non-mother women rebuild their memories about motherhood, that is, as they stand before such a vast campaign unfurled throughout the twentieth century for the sake of supposed female obligation to be a mother. To achieve the main objectives of the thesis we opted for the chapters division having as a guide the multiple feelings that may involve motherhood and its absence. For methodological purposes this research is anchored on the principles of oral history in order to discuss the reconstruction and meanings of memory about the experience of not being a mother, addressing feelings such as love, desire to know, love, absence and loneliness. The interviews of non-mother women are divided into three major groups. The first group is occupied by women born in the 1920s and 1930s and thus entered the sexual-reproductive life in the 1940s and 1950s. The second group consists of women born in the decades from 1940 to 1950 and from the beginning of their reproductive sexual life (in the 1960s and 1970s) have lived with the so-called 'sexual revolution', the creation of the pill and the popularization of other contraceptive methods. The third group consists of young ladies who were born in the sexual revolution, that is, in the 1960s and 1970s and so began their sexual and reproductive lives in the 1980s and 1990s. In order to verify the consolidation of maternal stereotype throughout the twentieth century as well as debates about infertility and sterility we chose to analyze medical thesis presented to the College of Medicine of Rio de Janeiro dated from the first half of the twentieth century. To understand the intermediation of this medical discourse, consolidated at the beginning of the century, and the women, we chose to analyze the "Pais e Filhos" magazine, founded in 1968 and existing in the publishing market until today. However, the period analyzed covers the years 1968 to 2000, thus closing the twentieth century. The magazine's choice is due to the fact of being the first Brazilian magazine to deal specifically with pregnancy and motherhood. We consider the magazine as a mediator between medical knowledge and women, therefore, a dissemination vehicle of knowledge and practices regarding motherhood and the absence of children.
