Defesa : Curitiba, 14/06/2022Inclui referênciasResumo: Estrabão, um geógrafo nascido no antigo Oriente Grego, cresceu em um mundo que, a partir de uma certa perspectiva, pode ser descrito como a síntese do encontro das águas do poder romano com a cultura helênica: enquanto diversas cidades gregas passaram a compor o território do Império Romano, assim como a maior parte do mundo conhecido na época, os gregos marcaram profundamente a vida cultural em Roma, seja na literatura, ou na esfera intelectual. Além disso, Estrabão foi espectador de um período politicamente muito sensível da história romana: o fim da República até a consolidação do Principado de Augusto. Neste contexto de expansão territorial e de consolidação de um novo regime político, o conhecimento geográfico foi constantemente instrumentalizado para produzir uma imagem pública favorável da Roma Augustana. Que Estrabão tenha produzido tal imagem é inquestionável, mas que tenha instrumentalizado conscientemente o conhecimento na sua Geografia para este fim é ao menos questionável, pois observamos uma preocupação do geógrafo muito maior em reverenciar a cultura grega e o seu vigor dentro da nova ordem política romana, mesmo séculos após seu ápice. A partir dessas considerações, procuramos entender qual o lugar da Geografia e de Estrabão entre o poder romano e a cultura grega através de uma leitura sobre como o geógrafo retratou os maiores referenciais da cultura grega, principalmente Homero, e como retratou os três romanos protagonistas do processo de transição da República para a consolidação do Principado, Júlio César, Augusto e Tibério.Abstract: Strabo, an eastern ancient greek born geographer, grew in a world that, seen by a certain perspective, can be described as a synthesis of the encounter of the waters of the roman power with that of the hellenic culture: while several greek cities passed to be part of the territory under the control of the Roman Empire, as have happened with most of the known world at the time, the greeks deeply marked the cultural life at Rome, whether in literature or in the intellectual life. Moreover, Strabo watched a very sensible political period in the roman history: that of the end of the Republic until the consolidation of the Augustan Principate. In such a context of territorial expansion and establishment of a new political regime, geographical knowledge was often used to portray a public favorable image of Augustan Rome. There is no doubt that Strabo produced such an image, but that he consciously instrumentalized the knowledge in his Geography to such a purpose is at least problematic, since we can see a far higher concern of the geographer to pay honors to the greek culture and its strength inside the new roman political order, even centuries far from its summit.
