Os processos de apagamento e acréscimo da vogal átona inicial são denominados aférese e prótese, respectivamente, e são evidenciados diacronicamente e sincronicamente, podendo encontrar casos tanto no período de aquisição da linguagem quanto de variação. Apesar desses processos estarem presentes na língua e serem abordados em diversas gramáticas, são poucos os estudos que tratam desse tema mais detalhadamente e que consideram tanto os contextos linguísticos como os extralinguísticos. A partir disso, esta pesquisa foi metodologicamente fundamentada nos pressupostos da Teoria da Variação e Mudança Linguística (WEINREICH; LABOV; HERZOG, 2006 [1975]; LABOV, 2008 [1972]), que compreende a língua como um sistema heterogêneo, variável e social. Com base nisso, este estudo teve como objetivos: (i) investigar se há o apagamento e o acréscimo da vogal átona oral inicial; (ii) verificar qual vogal é mais propensa a aplicação dos fenômenos; (iii) analisar a influência de variáveis linguísticas e sociais para a realização dos processos; e (iv) contribuir para a descrição sociolinguística do Português Brasileiro. Sendo assim, para a realização deste trabalho, foram analisadas amostras de fala do interior paulista extraídas do banco de dados IBORUNA (GONÇALVES, 2022 [2007]), resultado do Projeto ALIP (Proc. FAPESP 03/08058-6), que conta com amostras de fala espontânea de informantes de sete dos 96 municípios que compõem a região administrativa de São José do Rio Preto. Os 152 informantes são estratificados quanto a dois sexos/gêneros (feminino/masculino), cinco faixas etárias (7-15 anos, 16-25 anos, 26-35 anos, 36- 55 anos e acima de 55 anos) e quatro escolaridades (1° Ciclo do Ensino Fundamental, 2° Ciclo do Ensino Fundamental, Ensino Médio e Ensino Superior). Como variáveis linguísticas investigadas, têm-se: (i) posição da sílaba em relação à tônica; (ii) contexto fônico precedente; (iii) contexto fônico seguinte; (iv) classe gramatical do vocábulo; (v) características articulatórias da vogal; e (vi) paradigma. Por meio dos arquivos de transcrição ortográfica e dos arquivos sonoros disponibilizados pelo banco de dados, foi realizada uma análise de oitiva dos arquivos sonoros. Coletadas todas as ocorrências de apagamento e de acréscimo de vogal átona oral na estrutura silábica V presentes nas entrevistas, procedeu-se à tabulação dos dados e à análise por meio do programa estatístico Goldvarb X. Como resultado, obtiveram-se 43 casos de acréscimo da vogal e 4.420 de apagamento da vogal analisada, em um córpus de 24.803 vocábulos iniciados por vogais átonas oral em estrutura silábica V. Dos casos de aférese, a variável relevante para aplicação do processo foi a classe gramatical, seguida da variável posição da sílaba em relação à tônica. Por fim, os casos de prótese não se mostraram um processo produtivo na variedade de São José do Rio Preto, com ocorrências em apenas 10 vocábulosAbstract: The present study analyzed the deletion, as in obrigado ~ Øbrigado (‘thank you’), and the addition, as in _voar" ~ "avoar (‘to fly’), of unstressed oral vowels in the syllabic structure V, at the beginning of words. The processes of deletion and addition of the initial unstressed vowel are referred to as apheresis and prothesis, respectively, and are evidenced diachronically and synchronically, occurring in both language acquisition and variation contexts. Despite these processes being present in the language and addressed in various grammars, there are few studies that delve into this topic in more detail, considering both linguistic and extralinguistic contexts. Therefore, this research was methodologically grounded in the assumptions of the Linguistic Variation and Change Theory (WEINREICH; LABOV; HERZOG, 2006 [1975]; LABOV, 2008 [1972]), which views language as a heterogeneous, variable, and social system. Based on this, the study aimed to: (i) investigate whether there is deletion and addition of the initial unstressed oral vowel; (ii) determine which vowel is more prone to these phenomena; (iii) analyze the influence of linguistic and social variables on the occurrence of these processes; and (iv) contribute to the sociolinguistic description of Brazilian Portuguese. To accomplish this work, speech samples from the interior of São Paulo were analyzed, extracted from the IBORUNA database (GONÇALVES, 2022 [2007]), a result of the ALIP Project (Proc. FAPESP 03/08058-6). The database includes spontaneous speech samples from informants in seven out of the 96 municipalities that make up the administrative region of São José do Rio Preto. The 152 informants are stratified by two genders (female/male), five age groups (7-15 years, 16-25 years, 26-35 years, 36-55 years, and over 55 years), and four levels of education (1st Cycle of Elementary School, 2nd Cycle of Elementary School, High School, and Higher Education). The linguistic variables investigated include: (i) syllable position in relation to the tonic; (ii) preceding phonetic context; (iii) following phonetic context; (iv) grammatical class of the word; (v) articulatory characteristics of the vowel; and (vi) paradigm. Through the orthographic transcription files and sound files provided by the database, a listening analysis of the sound files was conducted. All occurrences of deletion and addition of unstressed oral vowels in the syllabic structure V present in the interviews were collected, and the data were tabulated and analyzed using the Goldvarb X statistical program. As a result, 43 cases of vowel addition and 4,420 cases of vowel deletion were obtained, in a corpus of 24,803 words beginning with unstressed oral vowels in syllabic structure V. For apheresis cases, the relevant variable for the application of the process was the grammatical class, followed by the syllable position variable in relation to the tonic.
