Defesa : Curitiba, 23/08/2019Inclui referências: p. 239-248Resumo: O objetivo nesse estudo foi compreender como a língua ucraniana, falada pelos descendentes de ucranianos no munícipio paranaense de Prudentópolis entre 1940 e 2018, teria sido fundamental na preservação da identidade e/ou na construção das fronteiras étnicas do grupo. Instalados a partir da última década do século XIX, ainda recentemente o idioma era aprendido no contexto familiar antes do português. O recorte temporal justifica-se em função da utilização de fontes orais. Quarenta pessoas entrevistadas foram distribuídas em função da idade em quatro gerações ou coortes; o intuito foi analisar as mudanças no uso da língua e na percepção das pessoas acerca dessa utilização ao longo dos anos, distinguindo-se as gerações. Em função da reiterada importância atribuída à Igreja no processo de preservação da língua ucraniana foram também realizadas oito entrevistas com religiosos ucraíno-brasileiros (padres, catequistas e freiras). Além da metodologia da História Oral, as considerações teórico-metodológicas de Karl Mannheim no que concerne às gerações foram de suma importância, bem como de outros autores que também tratam das implicações do uso deste conceito como categoria de análise. No que diz respeito à identidade étnica e cultural os escritos de Fredrik Barth e Denys Cuche foram utilizados na fundamentação teórica; ambos os autores apregoam que a identidade e suas fronteiras são fruto de relações sociais e culturais. O uso da língua ucraniana ocorre em diferentes ambientes, portanto, a conceituação de lugar e espaço na perspectiva de Michel de Certeau mostrou-se adequada para a pesquisa. Uma vez que as entrevistas são gravadas no presente, mas com o intuito de compreender o passado e suas mudanças ao longo do tempo, é que as definições de memória foram problematizadas, principalmente a partir de Joël Candau. A tese desenvolve-se em cinco capítulos, da seguinte maneira. No capítulo 1 buscou-se compreender a luta histórica dos ucranianos pelo direito de uso do seu próprio idioma tanto na Europa como no Brasil. No capítulo 2 foi analisado como do monolinguismo ucraniano passou-se para o bilinguismo ucraniano-português até atingir-se ou configurar-se uma situação de diglossia. Nos capítulos 3 e 4 foram analisadas as diferentes percepções entre as amostragens das quatro gerações acerca da importância e do uso da língua ucraniana e como ela foi/é um fator de preservação da identidade e delimitação das fronteiras étnicas. No capítulo 5 buscou-se analisar o papel da Igreja nesse processo e a visão do clero sobre o tema. O que foi possível concluir ao final da pesquisa é que a língua, ainda que falada cada vez menos pelas gerações mais jovens, representou e continua sendo um elo identitário e um fator fundamental das fronteiras étnicas entre os descendentes de ucranianos. Gerações.Abstract: The aim of this study was to understand how the Ukrainian language, spoken by the Ukrainian descendants in the town of Prudentópolis, between 1940 and 2018, was fundamental in the preservation of identity and/or in the construction of the ethnic boundaries of the group. Settled since the last decade of the nineteenth century, still recently the language was learnt in the family context before Portuguese. The time frame is justified on the basis of the use of oral sources. Forty people were interviewed and distributed in four generations or cohorts, according to their age. The aim was to analyze the changes in the use of the language and in the people's perception on this use throughout the years, distinguishing the generations. Because of the major importance attributed to the Church in the process of preservation of the Ukrainian language, eight interviews with Ukrainian-Brazilian religious people (priests, catechists and nuns) were also carried out. Apart from the methodology of Oral History, Karl Mannheim's theoretical-methodological considerations regarding the generations were extremely important, as well as other author's considerations that also deal with the implications of the use of this concept as a category of analysis. Concerning the ethnic and cultural identity, Fredrik Barth's and Denys Cuche's writings were used in the theoretical foundation; both authors state that identity and its boundaries are the fruit of social and cultural relationships. The use of the Ukrainian language takes place in different environments; therefore, the conception of place and space from Michel de Certeau's perspective proved to be adequate for the research. Since the interviews are recorded in the present, but with the aim of understanding the past and its changes over time, the definitions of memory were problematized, mainly from Joel Candau. The thesis is developed in five chapters, as follows. In chapter 1, there was an attempt to understand the Ukrainians' historical struggle for the right to use their own language both in Europe and in Brazil. In chapter 2, an analysis was made on how the Ukrainian monolingualism moved to the Ukrainian-Portuguese bilingualism until it reached or configured a situation of diglossia. In chapters 3 and 4, an analysis was made on the different perceptions about the importance and the use of the Ukrainian language, among the samples of the four generations, and on how the language was/is a factor of identity preservation and delimitation of ethnic boundaries. In chapter 5, there was an attempt to analyze the role of the Church in this process and the clergy view on the theme. What was possible to conclude at the end of the research is that the language, even if less and less spoken by the younger generations, represented and is still an identity link and a fundamental factor of the ethnic boundaries among the Ukrainian descendants.
