Defesa: Curitiba, 09/04/2015Inclui referências : fls. 203-210Resumo: Esta tese de doutorado foi construída através de alguns questionamentos: Como entender a História Natural de Plínio, o Velho como uma obra do gênero de História? Se o conceito de História aparece na obra pliniana, qual é o seu conteúdo/definição? É possível entender a História Natural por outro viés que não o do enciclopedismo? Para alcançar respostas satisfatórias foi preciso compreender como os autores que trabalharam com a História Natural a interpretaram. Isto se fez necessário para localizar o nosso objeto de estudo dentro da tradição historiográfica e entender no que a nossa tese poderia contribuir nos estudos sobre Plínio. Desse modo, estabelecemos a Primeira Parte como o local das discussões historiográficas; local de debate entre as visões do passado e o olhar que aqui propomos. Nosso trabalho não compactua com as noções mais difundidas sobre a História Natural como uma enciclopédia, mas expomos argumentos para compreendê-la como uma obra do gênero de História. Assim, a Segunda Parte da tese mostra a maneira como fizemos a leitura da obra pliniana. Leitura que nos proporcionou Quatro Argumentos que respondem como entendemos o conceito de História na obra pliniana e as propostas que a diferem de outras obras do gênero de História da Antiguidade. Aqui não encontramos o sangue, nem as guerras, nem as grandiosas conquistas militares de Roma, mas as conquistas do cotidiano. Uma História dos pequenos feitos - ou seria da paz? Palavras-chave: História; História Natural; Plínio, o Velho.Abstract: This doctorate thesis was constructed under the following questions: How can we understand Pliny the Elder's Natural History as a work of historical genre? If the concept of History appears in the work of Pliny, what is it subject/definition? Is it possible to understand the Natural History by another bias than the one of the encyclopedia? In order to achieve satisfactory answers it was necessary to comprehend how other authors that worked with the Natural History have interpreted it. It was required to do it to locate our object of study within the historiographical tradition and understand in what ways our thesis could contribute to the studys of Pliny's work. Thereby, we have established the First Part of this work as the site for the historiographical discussions; a place for the debate between the visions of the past and the view we propose in here. Our work does not agree with the most disseminated ideas about the Natural History as an encyclopedia, but we expose arguments trying to comprehend it as a work of the historical genre. Therefore, the Second Part of this thesis shows how we have done the reading of Pliny's work. This reading had provided four arguments that answer how we understand the concept of History in Pliny's Natural History and the approaches that differ it from the other historical works in the Ancient world. Here we will not find the blood, nor the wars, nor the great military conquests of Rome, but the everyday conquests. A History of the little facts - or would it be a History of peace?
