Defesa : Curitiba, 30/03/2023Inclui referênciasResumo: O stylus phantasticus foi um estilo de composição e de performance desenvolvido a partir do século XVII e foi definido como um estilo que preza pela liberdade, tanto do compositor quanto do intérprete, para mover os afetos dos ouvintes, arrebatando-os por meio de um jogo de expectativas. A retórica, por sua vez, e seu estudo remontam à Antiguidade Clássica, notadamente nas obras de Aristóteles, Cícero e Quintiliano. A utilização da retórica como forma de persuasão e de comunicação de emoções e ideias foi basilar para artistas do Renascimento e do período Barroco. Na música, a retórica assumiu a forma de artifícios utilizados por compositores para reforçar elementos específicos em suas obras. Johann Sebastian Bach, inserido neste contexto musical, produziu obras utilizando-se destas duas ferramentas como forma de evidenciar os afetos em algumas de suas obras, em especial em suas primeiras composições. Assim, esta dissertação propõe demonstrar as características do stylus phantasticus na tocata BWV 912 bem como apontar nestes elementos ascendências retóricas manifestadas naquela obra. Como fim, este trabalho busca fornecer uma análise que contribua para revelar as estratégias que foram utilizadas pelo compositor para ressaltar os afetos e o caráter fantástico desta peça.Abstract: The stylus phantasticus was a style of composition and performance developed from the seventh century onwards and was defined as a style that values freedom, for both composer and performer, to move the listeners' affections enrapturing them by a set of expectations. Rhetoric and its studies date back to the Classical Antiquity, notably in the works of Aristotle, Cicero and Quintilian. The application of rhetoric as a form of persuasion and communication of feelings and ideas was fundamental to artists from the Renaissance and Baroque period. In music, rhetoric has taken the form of tools employed by composers to increase the effect of specific elements in their works. Johann Sebastian Bach, inserted in that musical context, utilized both tools to emphasize the affects in his compositions, especially in his early works. Thereby, this dissertation proposes to demonstrate the characteristics of the stylus phantasticus in the toccata BWV 912 as well to point out in these elements rhetorical ascendancies manifested in that work.
