Nossa proposta e discutir a figuracao do rei portugues D. Sebastiao (1554-1578) que e o ponto de partida para o desenvolvimento do enredo, no qual o protagonista Sebastiao de Castro e construido como uma parodia de D. Sebastiao que, ao mesmo tempo em que se aproxima do referente historico e mitico rei, por outro lado, distancia-se no tempo e nas escolhas feitas ao longo da vida desse personagem que seguira se construindo e reconstruindo na sombra do seu homonimo. Sendo assim, o personagem de Almeida Faria e uma especie de duplo do jovem rei que morreu em 1578 na batalha de Alcacer Quibir. A presenca do mito sebastico na ficcao portuguesa produzida apos a Revolucao dos Cravos (1974) possibilita reflexoes e analises sobre a forca dos mitos em momentos paradigmaticos da historia. O romance O conquistador encerra um ciclo do autor que e antecedido pelos livros de sua Tetralogia Lusitana que tem como pano de fundo a historia portuguesa recente. D. Sebastiao, um rei casto e com formacao anacronica, queria ser o ultimo guerreiro das cruzadas que o tempo se incumbiu de materializa-lo na memoria coletiva como uma figura muito particular. O sebastianismo se apropria de crencas de tradicao messianica e encontra no joaquimismo um ancoradouro adequado. A incerteza com a morte do rei e o desaparecimento do corpo na batalha no Marrocos contra os mouros inimigos historicos da Terra Santa e do catolicismo, segundo a visao portuguesa, ajudam a construir a fama e a lenda de D. Sebastiao, o Encoberto. O sebastianismo sera entao um elo de esperanca e resistencia importante ja em 1580, contra o dominio filipino, logo apos a anexacao dos dois reinos pela Espanha. Elemento de forte presenca na historia portuguesa, pos-seculo XVI, o sebastianismo segue seu curso, manifestando-se em momentos de crises politicas agudas. O protagonista Sebastiao de Castro em busca de sua identidade sente o peso e as cobrancas de sua parecenca com o rei e vive um dilema: sera ele uma reencarnacao da figura mitico/historica? Sera que o futuro ira conduzi-lo a mesma tragedia por qual passaram D.Sebastiao e a nacao? Como o rei seicentista, vive cheio de duvidas sobre seu eu. O momento historico presente no romance de Almeida Faria e exatamente o fim da ditadura de Oliveira Salazar que sera marcante na vida de nosso protagonista e mostra o novo periodo por qual o pais esta prestes a passar, ou seja, uma nova realidade esperada com anseio por muitos. Enfim, n.O Conquistador, Almeida Faria, ao parodiar o rei, desconstroi o mito, trabalhando-o pelo inverso, as diferencas sao paralelamente construidas para marcar as semelhancas evidentes. O protagonista Sebastiao de Castro e um ser erotizado, conquistador do amor e nao de novas terras.Abstract: The present study has as object the romance ¡°O Conquistador¡± by Almeida Faria (1943-) a Portuguese writer. Our proposal is to discuss the figuration of the Portuguese king Don Sebastian (1554-1578) who is the first move to develop the plot. In the plot the protagonist Sebastiao de Castro is constructed as a parody of the king Sebastian of Portugal, who both gets close to the King.s historical and mythic referential and at the same time gets far in time and in the choices he does through out his character.s life. Character who will continuously construct and reconstruct himself under his homonymous. profile. Thus, Almeida Faria.s character is something of a double king who died in 1578 in the battle of Alcacer Quibir (Field of the Three kings). The presence of the sebastianism myth in the Portuguese fiction, which was produced after the Carnation Revolution (1974), makes possible the reflections and analyses about the power of the myths in the paradigmatic moments of history. The romance ¡°O Conquistador¡± closes an author.s cycle, preceded by the books of his Lusitanian Tetralogy which represents the recent Portuguese history. The king Sebastian, a sixteenth century king with an anachronistic background, desired to be the last crusade warrior, the time was responsible to materialize him in the collective memory as a very peculiar symbol. The sebastianism incorporates believes from the messianic tradition and meets in the joaquimismo its best harbor. According to the Portuguese view the two following facts, the uncertainty that came with the death of the king and the missing body in the battle of Morocco against the moors, who were historical enemies of the Saint Earth and of the Catholicism, helped to construct Don Sebastian.s fame and legend, the Covered. The sebastianism will be then, an important link of hope and resistance since 1580, against the Philippine domain, right after Spain integrated the two kingdoms. Element of powerful presence in the Portuguese history, post XVI century, the sebastianism goes on, manifesting itself during severe political crises. The protagonist Sebastiao de Castro searching for his identity feels the responsibility and the charges of this likeness to the king and lives a dilemma: Will he be a reincarnation of the mythic/historical character? Will the future conduct him to the same tragedy Don Sebastian and the nation went through? As the king, he lives full of doubts about who he is, his ¡°I¡±. The historical moment set in Almeida Faria.s romance is exactly the end of Oliveira Salazar.s dictatorship, which will be decisive in our protagonist.s life and shows a new time for the country, that is, a new reality a lot of people anxiously waited for. Summing up, in ¡°O Conquistador¡±, when Almeida Faria makes a parody to the king, he deconstruct the myth, making it the other way round, the differences are constructed side by side to set the evident likeness.
