Franchi foi um linguista brasileiro que propôs, nos anos 1970, uma teoria funcional da linguagem. Essa teoria se desenha, mais especificamente, em sua tese de doutorado Hipóteses para uma Teoria Funcional da Linguagem, defendida em 1976 sob orientação de Marcelo Dascal. No centro dessa teoria está a investigação sobre o problema da significação das línguas naturais. Para Franchi, sintaxe e semântica se relacionam e são interdependentes, mesmo co-dependentes, dentro do funcionamento complexo das línguas naturais. O funcionamento, nesse caso, envolve especialmente a noção de função e a ideia de que uma teoria da linguagem deve atender, ao mesmo tempo, ao crivo da situação e do formalismo. Dessa forma, a teoria franchiana é uma teoria que propõe a formalização de algo que se altera por contexto; é, portanto, uma teoria dinâmica da linguagem. Essa formalização usa, como ferramenta, a Lógica Combinatória de Curry e Feys. Para compreender melhor as ideias franchianas, partimos de a) um panorama histórico-biográfico e b) suas concepções de linguagem, ensino e ciência. Sobre o panorama histórico, traçamos uma biografia de Franchi, entrecortando sua trajetória com informações sobre o contexto em que ele estava inserido. Sobre suas concepções de linguagem, ensino e ciência, nossa exposição se valeu de relações que o pensamento franchiano estabelece com outros teóricos, principalmente a relação com Wilhelm von Humboldt, Mario Bunge, Jean Piaget, Antoine Culioli, Jean Cavaillès, Simon Schwartzman e Sebastian Shaumyan. São autores que auxiliam na leitura e no entendimento da obra de Franchi. Também exploramos sua influência em uma geração de linguistas que empreenderam um trabalho sobre diversos campos da linguística utilizando suas concepções de atividade constitutiva, indeterminação da linguagem; investigamos como esses conceitos aparecem nos trabalhos de José Borges Neto, Maria Irma Coudry, Sírio Possenti, Lígia Negri, Regina Céli Moraes Withaker Franchi, João Wanderley Geraldi, e Márcia Cançado. Além disso, trouxemos, como anexo, uma edição redigitada de Hipóteses para uma Teoria Funcional da Linguagem. Dessa forma, este trabalho funciona também como uma espécie de guia de leitura da tese de doutorado de Franchi. Palavras-chave: Carlos Franchi. Teoria funcional da linguagem. Atividade Constitutiva. Franchi was a Brazilian linguist who proposed, in the 1970s, a functional theory of language. This theory is drawn, more specifically, in his doctoral thesis Hypotheses for a Functional Theory of Language, defended in 1976 under the guidance of Marcelo Dascal. At the center of this theory is research on the problem of the meaning of natural languages. For Franchi, syntax and semantics are interrelated and interdependent, even codependent, within the complex functioning of natural languages. The functioning, in this case, involves especially the notion of function and the idea that a theory of language must attend, at the same time, to the sieve of the situation and formalism. Thus, the franchian theory is a theory that proposes the formalization of something that changes by context; it is, therefore, a dynamic theory of language. This formalization uses Curry and Feys' Combinatory Logic as a tool. To better understand Franchising ideas, we start from a) a historical overview and b) their conceptions of language, teaching and science About the historical-biographical panorama, we draw a biography of Franchi, cutting his trajectory with information about the context in which he was inserted. Regarding their conceptions of language, teaching and science, our exhibition made use of relationships that franchian thought establishes with other theorists, mainly the relationship with Wilhelm von Humboldt, Mario Bunge, Jean Piaget, Antoine Culioli, Jean Cavaillès, Simon Schwartzman and Sebastian Shaumyan. They are authors who assist in reading and understanding Franchi's work. We have also explored its influence on a generation of linguists who have undertaken work on various fields of linguistics using their conceptions of constitutive activity, language indeterminacy; we investigate how these concepts appear in the works of José Borges Neto, Maria Irma Coudry, Sírio Possenti, Ligia Negri, Regina Céli Moraes Withaker Franchi, João Wanderley Geraldi, and Márcia Cançado. In addition, we brought, as an attachment, a rewritten edition of Hypotheses for a Functional TheoryofLanguage. Thus, this work also serves as a kind of reading guide for Franchi's doctoral thesis.
