Considerando que os esforços da crítica filosófica nas últimas décadas tiveram êxito em revelar, por trás de uma obra fragmentada e multiforme, uma filosofia materialista coerente, aqui concentramos nossa atenção na tentativa de examinar qual o status teórico ou epistêmico desse materialismo, que nada tem de dogmático. Para fazê-lo, primeiro investigamos aspectos históricos e filosóficos que tornam a escrita - e a leitura - dos autores setecentistas, e a de Diderot em especial, bastante peculiar e complexa. Visto no espelho do libertino erudito do século XVII, o iluminista do século XVIII já não se assemelha em nada à caricatura dos manuais de história da filosofia e revela as ambiguidades vividas por esses autores. Em seguida, analisa-se a relação da escrita filosófica de Diderot com certa tradição satírica. O autor herda da sátira inglesa a complexidade no trato do fenômeno do entusiasmo, indo do riso à compaixão, enquanto sua escrita passa do tom satírico ao revoltado, dependendo da circunstância. Por fim, e de modo mais detido, apreciamos as relações da filosofia de Diderot com o ceticismo. Identificamos dois registros distintos em que essa relação se dá, correspondendo a duas vertentes modernas do ceticismo - a dos 'novos pirrônicos' e a do ceticismo epistêmico. Analisando o primeiro caso somos levados a perceber que o materialismo de nosso autor converge com a tradição do pirronismo moderno, depois atualizada por Bayle e Fontenelle, no sentido de atribuir as crenças, o pensamento e até as ideias metafísicas a certos determinantes materiais como as paixões, as inclinações e a organização corporal - daí a incerteza a respeito dessas ideias e a necessidade de suspensão do juízo. Por outro lado, esse primeiro passo cético determina o caráter não dogmático de sua filosofia materialista, que incorpora um ceticismo metodológico para formular um tipo de teoria cujo estatuto epistêmico é uma criação do século XVIII, comparável à que Kant faria em solo alemão logo em seguida.Abstract: This work deals with the theoretical status of Diderot's materialism. Considering that the efforts of philosophical criticism in recent decades have succeeded in revealing, behind a fragmented and multiform work, a coherent materialist philosophy, here we focus our attention on trying to examine the theoretical or epistemic status of this materialism, which is not dogmatic at all. To do so, we first investigate historical and philosophical aspects that make the writing - and reading - of 18th-century authors, and that of Diderot in particular, quite peculiar and complex. Seen in the mirror of the erudite libertine of the 17th century, the enlightened philosopher of the 18th century no longer resembles anything like the caricature in the manuals of history of philosophy and reveals the ambiguities experienced by these authors. Next, the relationship between Diderot's philosophical writing and a certain satirical tradition is analyzed. The author inherits from English satire the complexity in dealing with the phenomenon of enthusiasm, ranging from laughter to compassion, while his writing goes from a satirical to an angry tone, depending on the circumstance. Finally, and in a more detailed way, we appreciate the relations between Diderot's materialist philosophy and skepticism. We identified two distinct registers in which this relationship takes place, corresponding to two modern strands of skepticism - that of the 'new Pyrrhonists' and that of epistemic skepticism. Analyzing the first case, we are led to realize that our author's materialism converges with the tradition of modern Pyrrhonism, later revitalized by Bayle and Fontenelle, in the sense of attributing beliefs, thought and even metaphysical ideas to certain material determinants such as passions, inclinations and body organization - hence the uncertainty about these ideas and the need for suspension of judgment.
