Defesa: Curitiba, 27/08/2012Bibliografia: fls. Abstract: The soil management activities modify the physical characteristics of the upper layer of the profile and, when improperly performed, leading to the increase of the water erosion and to the impoverishment of the soil in its place of origin, besides the risk of contamination and siltation of rivers. In order to study the loss of soil, water, nutrients and organic carbon of surface runoff in three different systems of soil tillage for planting Eucalyptus benthamii in Santa Catarina highlands, an experiment under natural rainfall in a Haplic Cambisol, with 14,8% slope, conducted during one year (Feb 2010 to Jan 2011), was carried out in a randomized complete block design (3 blocks). The tillage systems were: (i) subsoiling with "Ripper" with two shanks, up-and-downhill; (ii) subsoiling with "Ripper" with two shanks on the contour, and (iii) manual tillage. Plot dimensions were 14×24 m and delimited by metal sheets (20 cm buried and 20 cm above surface). Runoff volume was collected and measured in containers located on the lower end of the plot. Manual tillage showed the lowest soil loss (0,9 Mg ha-1 year-1), while subsoiling up-and-downhill had the highest soil losses (19,7 Mg ha-1 year-1). The volume of water lost by runoff was larger in subsoilling up-and-downhill and less in the subsoiling on the contour. The largest accumulated losses of the nutrients nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium, in total and soluble forms, as well as total organic carbon, were showed by the system of subsoiling up-and-downhill, while the lowest were observed by manual tillage. The concentrations of nutrients in soluble forms of nitrogen (N-NH4+and N-NO3-) and potassium, showed higher concentrations in runoff from three systems after fertilization. Temporally, the highest soil losses in the three systems were observed in the initial part of the study and are related to the time of the soil tillage, but also to increased rainfall during that time. The results show the systems subsoiling on the contour and manual tillage are good options to reduce the consequences caused by water erosion in forest areas, and these systems are recommended to the same conditions of this study.82f. : il.
