Defesa: Curitiba, 25/02/2015Inclui referências : f. 148-152Resumo: A música de John Dowland permanece até os dias atuais como uma referência frequente do período de ouro da cultura inglesa, destacando-se em uma época de intensa produção artística e marcada pela retomada do legado intelectual herdado dos antigos gregos e latinos. Ela também é constantemente associada ao temperamento melancólico. Neste sentido, propomos no presente trabalho a realização de um estudo sobre a representação da melancolia na música de Dowland. Inicialmente observaremos o entendimento conceitual desta afecção no contexto elisabetano formado a partir de um diálogo entre diversas áreas de conhecimento, como a medicina, filosofia, religião, fisiologia, astrologia, astronomia e o ocultismo, em que a teoria humoral é um eixo comum. E nas artes, a representação melancólica expressa essa multiplicidade de discursos através de uma série de convenções simbólicas. Sobre a música de Dowland, que compreende um vasto repertório de peças para alaúde solo, canções e peças para consorte instrumental, delimitamos como objeto de estudo as ayres, que são as canções para voz e alaúde publicadas entre 1597 e 1612. Metodologicamente, adotamos um posicionamento intertextual para as análises devido à natureza própria das ayres, que contemplam o âmbito verbal, além da dimensão estritamente musical. As artes visuais colaboram aqui para ampliar a análise, fornecendo importantes elementos para compreendermos a representação da melancolia nas artes em geral. Assim, uma investigação sobre a poesia elisabetana e as artes visuais precede a abordagem da representação da melancolia na música de Dowland. Palavras-chave: Música renascentista, Melancolia elisabetana, John Dowland, Música e Melancolia, Ayres para voz e alaúde.Abstract: John Dowland's music remains until now as a frequent reference from the golden time of the English culture, standing out in an age of intense artistic production and marked by the resumption of the intellectual legacy inherited from the ancient Greek and Latin cultures. It is also constantly associated to melancholic temper. On this point, we propose in the present dissertation a study about the representation of melancholy on John Dowland's music. First we will observe the conceptual understanding from this affection in elisabethan context constructed through a dialogue among several fields of knowledge - such as medicine, philosophy, religion, physiology, astrology, astronomy and occultism - in which humoral theory is a common axis. Furthermore, in the field of art, melancholic representation expresses this multiplicity of discourses through a series of symbolic conventions. Regarding John Downland's music, which comprises a huge repertory of compositions to solo lute, as well as songs and pieces for instrumental consort, our delimited study object are the ayres, which are the songs for voice and lute published between 1597 and 1612. Metodologically, we adopt an intertextual approach to make the analisys, due to the nature of ayres, which comprehends the verbal domain, besides the strictly musical dimension. The presence of visual arts collaborate here to enhance our analysis, bringing important elements to understand the representation of melancholy within the arts in general. So, an inquiry about Elisabethan poetry and visual arts precedes the approach of melancholy's representation in Dowland's music.
