Abstract: This thesis has as its object of investigation the (possible) relationships between genes and language. Since the Transformational-Generative Grammar (TGG) assumed as one of its main working hypotheses the Chomskyan idea that the language faculty is a genetically conditioned biological endowment, it has also assumed the commitment to establish plausible connections between the innate program of acquisition of any language (traditionally referred to as Universal Grammar) and the underlying genetic program responsible for the biochemical encoding of these innate linguistic properties. However, despite the fact that TGG has assumed the genetic etiology of language as a fundamental assumption, the concrete relationships between genes and language remain relatively unexplored. The main objective of this work is precisely to explore this area of intersection between Linguistics and Genetics, analyzing and problematizing a selected set of texts and researches related to the topic. For this, we start from the definition of the following problem: (i) What are the genes (or genetic factors) that determine the language faculty and how do they act?. Far from offering a categorical and complete answer to this question (to some extent not yet available in the current stage of human knowledge), we present throughout the work information, studies, analyzes and reflections that revolve around crucial aspects of the problem outlined in (i). Initially, we emphasize the biological uniqueness of the language faculty (a cognitive endowment exclusive to the human species), comparing it with the communicative competences of other animals; then, we present arguments in favor of the hypothesis of linguistic innateness, according to which human beings are born with a genetically programmed grammar that allows them to acquire the language of their environment; in order to materialize the discussion, we present in one of the chapters a series of genetic factors that, when affected by mutations, give rise to linguistic problems of a varied nature; given its paradigmatic character, we dedicate an entire chapter to the FOXP2 gene and the KE family (a family grouping that has among its members individuals who have a severe speech and language disorder derived from a point mutation in FOXP2); at the end, we return to some points of problem (i), contextualizing it within the framework of the Minimalist Program. Despite the technological advances in mapping between phenotype and genotype and the strong evidences related to the link between genes and language, much remains to be done to discover which genetic factors determine the faculty of language, how they act and for which linguistic properties they are responsible.1 recurso online : PDF.application/pdfBiolinguísticaGeneLetrasProfundezas biolinguísticas : uma investigação sobre as (possíveis) bases genéticas da linguageminfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesisporreponame:Repositório Institucional da UFPRinstname:Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR)instacron:UFPRinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessORIGINALR - D - RODRIGO PEREIRA DOS ANJOS.pdfapplication/pdf8006941https://acervodigital.ufpr.br/bitstream/1884/78066/1/R%20-%20D%20-%20RODRIGO%20PEREIRA%20DOS%20ANJOS.pdf0d24ffebc645ad9f722c18b3b1a13cb6MD51open access1884/780662022-08-24 10:25:44.897open accessoai:acervodigital.ufpr.br:1884/78066Repositório de PublicaçõesPUBhttp://acervodigital.ufpr.br/oai/requestopendoar:3082022-08-24T13:25:44Repositório Institucional da UFPR - Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR)false |
