O Estado recém saído da Revolução de 1930, preocupava-se sobretudo com o problema da criação de uma identidade nacional. O Estado Novo buscou legitimar seu regime autoritário através da criação de sofisticados aparatos culturais (DIP e Ministério da Educação) e da mobilização de amplos setores da intelectualidade brasileira ligados ao movimento modernista. Assim, intelectuais de direita e esquerda, provenientes muitas vezes de correntes de pensamento distintas, passaram a integrar os setores culturais estadonovistas, motivados pelo ambicioso projeto de construção da identidade cultural brasileira. Tal integração não significou uma flexibilidade do regime frente a pluralidade de idéias, haja vista que seus opositores, notadamente no caso de Mario Pedrosa, foram banidos do Estado gradativamente, ao longo do governo provisório que antecedeu ao Golpe. Dessa forma, a coerção e a marginalidade imprimiram a marca do projeto político cultural estadonovista. Com o objetivo de mostrar esta tensa relação entre intelectuais, artista e Estado é que resgatamos aqui Mario Pedrosa e Cândido Portinari.Abstract: This dissertation attempts to problematize one of the facets of the relationship between dissident intellectuals, artists and the Estado Novo (1937-1945), as it materializes in the figures of, both the art critic, Mario Pedrosa, and the painter, Cândido Portinari. The State, which had just gotten out of the 1930 Revolution, was most concerned about the creation of a national identity. The Estado Novo tried to legitimate its rather authoritarian regime through the creation of a sophisticated and ostentatious array of cultural projects, such as the DIP and the Ministry of Education, as well as the mobilization of ample sectors of the Brazilian intelligentsia related to the modernist movement. Thus, left and right wing intellectuals, often originating from different philosophical trends, started to join the cultural sectors of the Estado Novo, driven by the ambitious project of constructing a Brazilian cultural identity. However, such an adhesion did not mean that the regime became less rigid in relation to the plurality of ideas, given that its opponents had been gradually banished from the State - and more especially Mario Pedrosa - throughout the provisional government preceding the Coup d'Etat. Therefore, coercion and delinquency left their marks on the political and cultural project of the Estado Novo.
