A amostragem foi realizada no período entre 1988 e 1991, de maneira a abranger períodos de seca e cheia comuns na região. Foram selecionadas 8 estações de coleta, sendo 2 na Lagoa das Flores, 3 na Lagoa do Nicola e 3 na Lagoa Mirim. Cento e noventa e sete táxons encontram-se identificados, distribuídos em 30 famílias, 48 gêneros, 175 espécies, 26 variedades não típicas, 1 forma não típica e 9 táxons identificados a nível genérico. Cinquenta novas citações para o Estado do Rio Grande do Sul foram registradas e uma nova combinação foi proposta. Providenciou-se para cada táxon, citação da obra original; basônimo, quando existente; sinonímia, quando necessária; descrição; limites métricos observados; material examinado; distribuição geográfica no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul e comentários referentes à ocorrência de polimorfismos, problemas taxonômicos e nomenclaturais. Complementam o trabalho, chaves de identificação para as espécies e variedades dos gêneros inventariados, glossário de termos técnicos, além de mapa localizando a área estudada e as estações de coleta. Todos os táxons determinados foram fotografados, totalizando 547 ilustrações.Abstract: A floristic survey of the diatoms (Bacillariophyta) of the Lagoons Flores, Nicola and Mirim all of them located in a swamp called Taim in the countryside of Rio Grande, a town in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, was carried out based on thirty-two samples. The sampling was developed between 1988 and 1991, so that periods of drought, as well as floodings which are common in that area, were taken into consideration. Eight sampling stations were selected, being two of them in Lake das Flores, three in Lake do Nicola the three remeinder of them in Lake Mirim. One hundred seventy-five species, twenty-six non-typical varieties, one-typical form, and nine taxa identified at genera level. Fifty new references for the State of Rio Grande do Sul were registered and a new combination was proposed. For each taxon, the following information was provided: reference from the original publications; basyonim, whenever available; synonymy, whenever necessary; description; metrical limits observed; material which was examined; geographical distribution in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, and comments referring to the occurrence of the polymorphisms, taxonomic and nomenclatural problems. The thesis is complemented by keys to the identification to the species and varieties of the genera which were inventoried, glossary of technical words, and a map situating the area of study and the stations of sampling.
