Katherine Anne Porter insiste em dois fatos importantes em sua obra: que o simbolismo nasce da consciência do autor, juntamente com suas experiências, e ; que a procura da verdade foi uma de suas constantes ao escrever os contos. Daí a necessidade de investigar a verdade histórica, e nela descobrir o sentido mais profundo expresso através da simbologia da autora. Sob um clima de pós-revolução, (Revolução Mexicana de 1910) encontra-se um povo à procura da identidade por meio de reações antitéticas de amor e violência, fidelidade e traição. É um povo rebelde. Sua intransigência é individual e também social. Luta entre a solidão e a transcendência, aceitando a morte, e dela fazendo uso em suas explosões de protesto, desespero e ódio. Ao mesmo tempo, apresenta-se um povo que aspira à comunhão, ao amor, à tranqüilidade, ao contentamento e ao equilíbrio; uma comunidade que reconhece o valor da mulher e o seu desempenho social. Apesar de o homem aparecer em situações antagônicas, ele tem um ideal, e com este, uma grande esperança e uma perspectiva de salvação. A grande preocupação da autora é apresentar o indivíduo dentro da família e da sociedade. Esta sociedade é primitiva e se encontra dentro de um mundo agitado, em constante mudança. Apesar das dificuldades, entretanto, encara a situação com vigor e sem medo, como um desafio. A gênese da simbologia de Katherine Anne Porter foi procurada na verdade histórica com que ela se familiarizou, a ponto de identificar-se com a consciência primitiva das personagens e interpretar-lhes o universo de sua alma sofrida. Esse estado de espírito surge tanto nos títulos como na contextura dos contos, caracterizando esse universo.Summary: O símbolo folclórico e cristão nos contos mexicanos de Katherine Anne Porter . (The Folklore and Christian Symbol in the Mexican short-stories of Katherine Anne Porter) is limited to Maria Concepción, The Martyr, Virgin Violeta, Flowering Judas, Hacienda and That Tree. Katherine Anne Porter insists upon two important aspects in her work: . that the symbolism arises from the author's consciousness together with his experiences and; . that the search for truth was a constant theme in the writing of her short-stories. Hence the need to investigate the historical truth, in order to discover the deepest world of meaning expressed through the author's symbology. In a post-revolutionary climate (Mexican Revolution, 1910) we see a people searching for its identity by means of antithetic reactions of violence and love, of faithfulness and treachery. They are an insurgent people. Their intransigence is individual and also social. They struggle between solitude and transcendence, accepting death and making use of it in their explosions of protest, despair and hatred. At the same time, we are shown a people who aspire participation, love, peace, happiness and equilibrium; a community which recognizes the woman's values and her social performance. Although he turns up in opposing situations, the man has an ideal, and with it, a great hope for life and a perspective of salvation. The author's main concern is to present the individual within his family and society. This society is primitive and inhabits a confused world, in a constant state of change. Despite the difficulties, however, he faces up to the situation with strength and without fear, as a challenge. The genesis of Katherine Anne Porter's symbology was sought in the historical truth with which she made herself familiar to the point of identifying herself with the primitive consciousness of the characters she presents and interpreting the universe of their tortured souls.
