Resumo: ABSTRACT: The destruction ofnatural resources in the Amazon, caused by the building ofnew roads and the implementation oflarge agricultural, timber, minera! extraction and energy production projects impaired the socioeconomic and environmental development in the places they were implemented. Brazi! nut trees reserves in theAmazon were victims ofthis developmentpolicy where the averageproduction betweenperiods of1970/73 and 2007/10 declinedfrom 63,514 to 28,527 tons and the society was not effectively compensated by these externalities. In this work, we estimated the system of equations of supply and demand ofBrazil nut through the generaüzed method ofmoments, in order to analyze the market and determine the environmental cost oftheir destructions. Results showed that the supply ofBrazil nuts became perfectly inelastic, while demand was more elastic to price and income in the period studied. The prices offorestlands producedpositive impacts in the production of Brazil nuts. Environmental benefits ofproduction and marketing ofnuts declinedfrom R$ 62.35 million to R$ 46.05 million, which resulted in an environmental cost ofR$ 16.29 million peryear between 1990 and 2010. Finally, it is proposed that this should constitute the asset value ofenvironmental receivablesfund targeting thefinance of sustainable local development.

Finally, it is proposed that this should constitute the asset value ofenvironmental receivablesfund targeting thefinance of sustainable local development.A destruição dos recursos naturais na Amazônia, causada pela abertura de estradas e implantação de grandes projetos agropecuários, madeireiros, de extração mineral e produção de energia, não promoveu o desenvolvimento socioeconômico e ambiental nos locais onde esses projetos foram implantados. As reservas de castanheiras na Amazônia foram vítimas dessa política de desenvolvimento, em que a produção média entre os períodos 1970/75 e 2001/06 caiu de 63.514 toneladas para 28.527 toneladas, e a sociedade não foi efetivamente compensada por essas extemalidades. Neste trabalho, estimou-se o sistema de equações de oferta e demanda de castanha-do-brasil por meio do método dos momentos generalizados, comvistas a analisar o mercado e determinar o custo socioambiental de sua destruição. Os resultados mostraram que a oferta e a demanda de castanha tomaram-se mais inelásticas a preço no período estudado. O preço das terras de mata produziam impactos positivos na produção de castanha-do-brasil. Os benefícios socioambientais da produção e comercialização da castanha caíram de R$ 62,35 milhões para R$ 46,05 milhões, o que resultou no custo socioambiental de R$ 16,29 milhões por ano entre 1990 e 2010.
