Serological survey for leptospirosis in sheep flocks from Igarape-Açu, State of Para

The frequency of antibodies anti-Leptospira spp. was investigated in sheep flocks from the municipality of Igarape-Acu, located in the Bragantina micro-region in the State of Para, Brazil. The evaluation comprised 104 clinically healthy animals, ranging from two to nine months of age, both sexes, 65 of which were ‘Santa Ines’ and 39 were of mixed breed, all raised extensively in eight farms located in the city. One hundred four animals were examined; 14.42% (15 out of 104) tested positively at the microscopic agglutination test (MAT) for at least one of the 24 strains of Leptospira spp., with titles ranging from 100 to 1,600. There was a higher frequency of reactor animals strained with Autumnalis - 9.62% (10 out of 104) in both sexes, with the largest number of reactor animals aged more than six months.
