Resumo: The paper carries out a comparative analysis of the notions of personal identity and political engagement in the thought of Charles Taylor and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. From a bibliographical study of primary and secondary sources, it is concluded that both philosophers postulate an ontologically dialogical nature of personal identity, thus, essentially dependent on lasting relationship with others. On the other hand, Taylor and Rousseau equate the problem of political alienation in modernity based on distinct principles that serve as the justification for the political engagement of citizens.
