Resumo: his paper takes into account the discrete appendix of William English Walling, then a socialist – “Socialism and Pragmatism as seen in the Writings of Marx and Engels” – viewed to serve as theme for a return to the materialist conception of history, with a focus on the writings of Friedrich Engels. The choice of Walling pointed up itself by the fact that an alleged legacy of socialist-pragmatist or Marxist-pragmatist type goes the entire twentieth century to the present day. The examples will be many, but it seems to be found here the first draft of such an odyssey.
