Resumo: In this article I intend to reflecton a specific day in the history of Brazil: May 13, 1888, the date on which slavery was legally abolished in Brazil. The ideais to see how that event was experienced by several actors involved as well as their efforts to project that date to posterity as a founding moment in the country’s history. In the heat of the celebrations that followed the approval of the so-called Golden Law and in the years following that episode, fields of dispute were defined around the memory of abolition. The disputes revolved around which characters and events would gain prominence in the celebrations and in the memory of the abolition of captivity. These disputes were part of the political clashes that followed 13 May 1888 and marked the first years of the Republic.
