Resumo: This paper discusses the concept of sovereignty in Brazilian history, mainly in the 19th century, from a critical dialogue with historian Luisa Rauter Pereira, the author of the entry “sovereignty” in the “Lexicon of the history of Brazilian political concepts”. To do so, first it presents Luisa Pereira’s approach to that concept. Next, it focuses on the context of Brazil’s Independence, corroborating the main points of Luisa Pereira’s view, but introducing other primary sources and offering some points of divergence. Finally, it concludes with a brief reflection about the relationship between history and social theory to reply negatively to this question: in Brazil, is all history remorse?
