Resumo: When we were invited by Revista Nordestina de História do Brasil to coordinate and preface the thematic issue “Ancestral History of Brazil”, we did not stop wondering, as archaeologists and historians, what would be understood as ancestral in the epistemological context. At first, we think about themes related to prehistory, a term that has been used worldwide since the 19th century, when Sir Daniel Wilson used it for the very first time (Prehistoric Annals of Scotland, 1851, and Prehistoric man, 1862) and Sir John Lubbock, in his Pre-historic Times (1865). The term would not be successfully substituted by any other expression, but, would it be sufficient within the spirit of the Journal, which is primarily of a Brazilian History? How far would this ancestry go? We see, by the different meanings of the word, that ancestor can be everything that predates our contemporaneity, although with enough weight or historical significance to have influenced the formation of our future.
