Resumo: This text proposes to make reflections on what Archeology speaks about the coastal archaeological sites, especially those of Rio de Janeiro. In the 1980s, historical-cultural proposals gave way to systematic studies focused on adaptive responses of human populations in their cultural and chronological aspects. Studies of the social space of the coastal sites resulted in discussions about cultural identity. The shift of gaze over the isolated site to the cluster contributed to the paradigm breaking of the so-called “nomads” for groups that occupied for a long time a territory with abundant resources, in a relative sedentary lifestyle.
