Structure of feelings, Stimmung and atmosphere: A proposal for the systematization of the emerging mood studies

Resumo: This paper aims to identify a field in formation, herein named Mood Studies. Influenced by the “affective turn”, this field is composed of studies from several disciplines such as Sociology, Anthropology, Geography, Art History, Communication, Literature, and Architecture. Its common focus is on specific aspects of social phenomena such as mood, climate, and atmosphere. To map this field, three main concepts – Stimmung, atmosphere, and structure of feeling – are identified, and special attention is given to the hybridity between individual and collective, as well as between subjective and objective. With short genealogies, we show that these concepts are building a common grammar. This grammar and the critical detachment from Affect Theory provide specificity to the field.

Su enfoque común está en aspectos específicos de fenómenos sociales como el estado de ánimo, el clima y la atmósfera. Para mapear este campo, se identifican tres conceptos principales: Stimmung, atmósfera y estructura de sentimiento, y se presta especial atención a la hibridación entre individuo y colectivo, así como entre subjetivo y objetivo. Con breves genealogías, demostramos que estos conceptos construyen una gramática común. Esta gramática y el distanciamiento crítico de la teoría del afecto proporcionan especificidad al campo.O artigo busca identificar um campo de estudos em formação, aqui nomeado como Mood Studies. Esse campo, influenciado pela “virada afetiva”, tem abrigado estudos de diversas disciplinas, como Sociologia, Antropologia, Geografia, História da Arte, Comunicação, Literatura e Arquitetura. Seu foco comum são os aspectos específicos dos fenômenos sociais, como humor, clima e atmosfera. O mapeamento desse campo se dá pela identificação de três conceitos fundamentais – Stimmung, atmosfera e estrutura de sentimento – e da orientação em realçar, por meio desses conceitos, a hibridez entre individual e coletivo e entre subjetivo e objetivo. Realizando breves genealogias, ressalta-se as relações entre os conceitos de forma, a fazer ver a formação atual de uma gramática comum.
