THE UNIVERSITY-FIRMS INTERACTION PROCESS IN A UNIVERSITY INCUBATOR: THE CASE OF THE VALE DO RIO DOS SINOS UNIVERSITY’S INCUBATOR

Resumo: The implantation of firm incubators has been established as one of the strategies adopted in Brazil for the creation of small technology-based firms. In the incubators, a process of interaction is established among the Government, the University and the firms that should benefit, either directly or indirectly, each of the three participants.  The article seeks to evaluate the impact of the incubation process on the development of the incubated firms as well as on the teaching and research projects of the university.  The research studies seven resident firms at the incubator. The data about the firms was collected by means of a questionnaire applied by one of the authors directly to each one of the entrepreneurs. To characterize the impact of the incubator at the University and at the government the data came mainly from documents. The analysis of the data reveals that the incubation process is having a positive effect on the firms, since six of the seven firms analyzed are following a path considered adequate in the sense that they are entering the market with innovative skills, solid finances, and well prepared managers. However, the effect of the incubators on the University was found to be insignificant in what is concerned with teaching, research, and extension. But the incubator brought a new image for the university and lots of space in the media. For the government the main returns, at the moment, are the creation of twenty-six new jobs, but there is the perspective of future tax and other returns.

Em las incubadoras, se establece un proceso de interación entre el Gobierno, la Universidad y las empresas que beneficía, de forma directa o indirecta, los tres partícipes. El artículo procura evaluar el impacto del proceso de incubación tanto sobre el desarrollo de las empresas incubadas como sobre los proyectos de enseñansa y de investigación de la universidad. La investigación estudia las siete empresas residentes em la incubadora. Con relación a las empresas incubadas, los datos fueron colectados por medio de un cuestionário aplicado por uno de los autores directamente a cada uno de los empreendedores socios. Con relación a la Universidad, se procedió a una extensa investigación documental para caracterizar el impacto de la incubadora sobre la universidad. El análisis de los datos revela que el proceso de incubación está tendo suceso en lo que se refiere a los impactos junto a las empresas, pues seis de las siete empresas analizadas siguen una trayectoria considerada adecuada en el sentido de ingresaren en el mercado de forma innovadora, financeramente sólida y con sus gestores capacitados. Ya con relación a los impactos sobre la Universidad, se constató seren ellos todavía poco significativos y se buscó evaluar las principales causas de ese resultado.A implantação de incubadoras de empresas tem se constituído numa das estratégias adotadas no Brasil para a criação de pequenas empresas de base tecnológica. Nas incubadoras, estabelece-se um processo de interação entre o Governo, a Universidade e as empresas que beneficia, de forma direta ou indireta, os três partícipes. O artigo procura avaliar o impacto do processo de incubação tanto sobre o desenvolvimento das empresas incubadas como sobre os projetos de ensino e de pesquisa da universidade. A pesquisa estuda as sete empresas residentes na incubadora. Com relação às empresas incubadas, os dados foram coletados por meio de um questionário aplicado por um dos autores diretamente a cada um dos empreendedores sócios. Com relação à Universidade, procedeu-se a uma extensa pesquisa documental para caracterizar o impacto da incubadora sobre a universidade. A análise dos dados revela que o processo de incubação está tendo sucesso no que se refere aos impactos junto às empresas, pois seis das sete empresas analisadas seguem uma trajetória considerada adequada no sentido de ingressarem no mercado de forma inovadora, financeiramente sólida e com seus gestores capacitados.
