PROFESSIONAL AND AFFECTIVE LIFE OF 21TH CENTURY WOMEN: THE CASE OF THE PERMITTEES IN THE OTÁVIO ROCHA VIADUCT PORTO ALEGRE

Resumo: Female roles such as mother, wife and professional are recurrent in discussions brought about by different subjects (Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology, Administration). This research aims at analyzing the thinking and behavior of women that work in a certain commercial space in Porto Alegre, and to what extent action and supposedly modern discourses are coherent or contradictory. This task was accomplished by using the ethnographic method and techniques of true-life stories, testimonies, and systematic and participative observation to follow the trajectory of four women that work at the Otávio Rocha viaduct in Porto Alegre, between August 2002 and April 2003. The findings indicate that decisions are still centered on the male character. It is up to him to say yes or no when it comes to adopting a child, or to decide whether the work outside the home limits should be considered as a hobby or viewed as an opportunity of growth and professional accomplishment.

Los roles femeninos de madre, esposa y profesional se encuentran muy frecuentemente en la pauta de discusiones realizadas en distintas disciplinas (Sociología, Antropología, Psicología, Administración de Empresas). Esa investigación tiene el objeitvo de averiguar cómo actúan y piensan las mujeres en un determinado espacio comercial de Porto Alegre y en qué medida la acción y discursos considerados actuales son consoantes o contradictorios. Para ello, utilizamos el métodos etnográfico y técnicas de historia de vida, testimonios, observación sistemática y participante para seguir la trayectoria de cuatro mujeres que trabajan en el Viaducto Otávio Rocha, en Porto Alegre, en el periodo comprendido entre agosto de 2002 a abril de 2003. Los resultados indican que las decisiones se centran todavía en la figura masculina que es quien decide si la mujer puede o no adoptar un niño, si el trabajo fuera del ámbito doméstico debe ser considera sólo como ocio (hobby) o si debe ser considerado como una posibilidad de crecimiento y realización prefesional. Os papéis femininos de mãe, esposa e profissional encontram-se de modo recorrente na pauta das discussões entabuladas por diferentes disciplinas (Sociologia, Antropologia, Psicologia, Administração). Essa pesquisa objetiva verificar como as mulheres que atuam num determinado espaço comercial de Porto Alegre pensam e agem, em que medida ação e discursos ditos atuais são consoantes ou contraditórios. Para tanto utilizamo-nos do método etnográfico e das técnicas de histórias de vida, depoimento, observação sistemática e participante para acompanhar a trajetória de quatro mulheres que trabalham no Viaduto Otávio Rocha, em Porto Alegre, no período compreendido entre agosto de 2002 e abril de 2003. Os resultados apontam que as decisões ainda encontram-se centradas na figura masculina que é quem vai dizer se a mulher pode ou não adotar uma criança, se o trabalho fora do âmbito doméstico deve ser considerado apenas um “hobby” ou encarado como uma possibilidade de crescimento e realização profissional.
