SOCIOTECHNICAL MOMENTS OF ORGANIZATIONS TRANSFORMED BY ENTERPRISE RESOURCE PLANNING: THE CASE OF INDIVIDUAL WORK ROUTINES IN UNIVERSITIES

Resumo: | Enterprise resource planning (ERP) implementation drives nontrivial organizational changes that impact an individual’s work processes. This research maps out such an impact by means of a survey and in-depth interviews with employees of a large private university in Southern Brazil that has implemented a landmark ERP project. Eleven latent socio-technical factors supposedly describe ERP impact in universities – motivation, work standardization, information structure, managerial control, organogram, customer satisfaction, technological infrastructure, functions, user interface, productivity, and human development. Significant impact was observed in only four factors (motivation, work standardization, information structure, and managerial control), but the fact that the system was at its initial stages of adoption may have moderated the results. Given some unique attributes of the case under analysis (reported by the technology vendor as an international benchmark henceforth) and the research strategy that was adopted (qualitative investigation after multivariate statistics), the findings are quite original and of considerable importance to guide researchers and practitioners in understanding the organizational factors that may be affected by ERP implementation in universities. |

El presente estudio hizo un mapa de tal impacto mediante recogida de datos (survey) y entrevistas en profundidad con empleados de una gran universidad privada pionera en la implantación de sistema ERP de grande porte en Brasil. Se identificaron once factores de naturaleza sociotécnica en los cuales el impacto potencialmente se manifiesta: motivación, formalización del trabajo, estructuración de las informaciones, control gerencial, organigrama, satisfacción del cliente, infraestructura tecnológica, funciones, interfaz con el usuario, productividad y desarrollo humano. De estos, sólo la motivación, la formalización del trabajo, la estructuración de las informaciones y el control gerencial sufrieron impacto considerado significativo – aunque el hecho del sistema ERP se encuentre en fase inicial de uso a la época de la investigación, puede que haya contribuido para alguna imprecisión en los resultados. En función de algunos aspectos distintivos del caso en foco (reportado por el fabricante del sistema como siendo referencia internacional) y la estrategia de investigación adoptada (investigación cualitativa tras tratamiento cuantitativo), los resultados son importantes y ofrecen a investigadores y administradores un inventario cartográfico de factores organizacionales sean posiblemente impactados por la implantación de sistemas ERP en universidades.A implantação de sistemas integrados de gestão (ERP) provoca mudanças organizacionais importantes, que exercem impacto sobre as rotinas individuais de trabalho. O presente estudo mapeou tal impacto por meio de levantamento (survey) e entrevistas em profundidade com empregados de uma grande universidade privada pioneira na implantação de sistema ERP de grande porte no Brasil. Identificaram-se onze fatores de natureza sociotécnica nos quais o impacto potencialmente se manifesta: motivação, formalização do trabalho, estruturação das informações, controle gerencial, organograma, satisfação do cliente, infra-estrutura tecnológica, funções, interface com o usuário, produtividade e desenvolvimento humano. Desses, apenas a motivação, a formalização do trabalho, a estruturação das informações e o controle gerencial sofreram impacto considerado significativo – embora o fato de o sistema ERP se encontrar em fase inicial de uso à época da pesquisa possa haver contribuído para alguma imprecisão nos resultados.
