The Quest for Multidimensional Rationality through the Theory of Configuration

Resumo: Since the ancient Greek philosophers, the rationality concept has been defined as one of the main characteristics which distinguishes the humans from the rest of the animals. The Greek influence, such as that of Plato and Aristotle, and of empirical/rational philosophers such as Decartes and Thomas Hobbes, were the key factors for the models envolving the decision-taking proposed by Simon, Allison and Lindblon. The instrumental rationality model, the behavioral model, the organizational process model, the political model and the incremental model, along with the ten schools for strategy formation proposed by Mintzberg at alii. (2000), should be seen not as an excluding forme, but as a continuum which works in an interconnected form. This way, the present article renovates the multidimensional vision of man, initially approached by Aristotle and demonstrates the configuration theory as the best model for the construction of more competitive organizations.

La influencia de los griegos como Platón y Aristóteles y, de los filósofos empiristas/racionalistas, como Descartes y Thomas Hobbes, fueron marcantes para la formación de los modelos de tomadas de decisión en las organizaciones propuestas por Simon, Allison y Lindblon. El modelo de la racionalidad instrumental, el modelo comportamental, el modelo del proceso organizacional, el modelo político y el modelo incremental, juntamente com las diez escuelas de formación de estrategia propuestas por Mintzberg et alii. (2000), necesitan ser vistos no de forma excludente, pero como un continuum que trabajan de forma interrelacionada. De esa forma, este artículo hace un rescate de la visión multidimensional del hombre inicialmente abordada por Aristóteles y demostra la teoría de la configuración como la más apta para la construcción de organizaciones más competitivas.A racionalidade vem sendo definida a partir dos gregos como uma das principais características que distingue o homem dos outros animais. A influência dos gregos como Platão e Aristóteles e, dos filósofos empiristas/racionalistas, como Descartes e Thomas Hobbes, foram marcantes para a formação dos modelos de tomadas de decisão nas organizações propostas por Simon, Allison e Lindblon. O modelo da racionalidade instrumental, o modelo comportamental, o modelo do processo organizacional, o modelo político e o modelo incremental, juntamente com as dez escolas de formação de estratégia propostas por Mintzberg et alii. (2000), precisam ser vistos não de forma excludente, mas como um continuum que trabalham de forma interrelacionada.
